Denied CWU Applications / [DENIED]Gerald Furman's Civil Worker Application
« on: February 07, 2012, 02:35:30 AM »
~IC PART~
Full Name: Gerald Furman
Citizen identification(CID): 14500
Last Assigned Apartment Number: UCH:B1
Total Loyalist Points: 0
Sex: Male
Age: 42

How long have you been in City45:
Transferred from City 8 two days ago.

Why do you want to join the CWU?:
As a citizen of the Universal Union, it is my duty to serve others within this Union. By applying my skills to this trade, I hope to better myself, others, and the Union through hard work, diligence, and loyalty.

Have you ever been detained before?(If so why):
As a loyal citizen, I have never been detained.

Past experience with work/labor:
20 years of education (4 years of medical school). 3 years of residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Pre-war experience running own clinic in rural town. Pre-war experience running clinic in city.

Name 4 things the CWU Can possess, and 4 things we cant. Also state why.:
Workers may carry radios, to be contacted by other workers or by CCA officers. Medical workers may carry authorized medicines and other utensils such as Paracetamol for pain relief and reducing fever symptoms, bandages to bind wounds, and needles for the administration of other medicines. Workers may possess shipments, for the purpose of selling products to citizens. Workers may also carry any Union distributed items like any other citizen.
Workers may not possess non-Union distributed food, clothing, or books; these items are considered level three contraband. Workers may not possess unauthorized medical supplies; carrying such supplies without authorization may be considered a level two offense. Workers may not carry any police force items, such as zipties or door locks; these items are also considered level two contraband for anyone not a CCA officer. Lastly, workers may not carry any level one contraband, such as firearms or ammunition.

Tell us about what you can do.:
Having served as a physician for 11 years after receiving my medical license, I am experienced in numerous areas of medicine. I have experience in treating patients with the utmost respect and care, even in situations of great stress. I am dedicated to my work, and am always willing to lend a hand to citizens in need.

If a citizen asks for help and is new to the city, what would you do?:
As a worker, I would be well-equipped to answer any questions they may have (or deferring to another worker, should I be unable to answer them myself). I would offer a tour of the city, to help the citizen became acquainted with their surroundings. Also, I could help the citizen "break the ice" by introducing them to other citizens, who would no doubt help the new citizen settle in more easily.

~OOC Section~
Name: Jasdahlk
Timezone: UTC -6
SteamID: STEAM_0:0:29270475
Roleplay Experience: Several years.
Serious Roleplay Experience: 4 weeks.
Detail a regular day as a worker of the CWU?:
An average workday for a Union worker consists primarily of assisting citizens: from setting up a stand near the plaza and providing information, to running a shop and providing products, to running the medical center and caring for injured citizens.
A worker has a greater obligation to serve the Union than the responsibilities of a regular citizen; they must take more care to report crimes and provide help to the Civil Protection wherever possible. Workers may also delegate tasks to citizens to help them develop their desire to serve the Union, and providing rewards where deemed necessary.

Character Backstory:
Born in 1974, Gerald Furman grew up in a loving home in the town of Westwood, New Jersey. His father was a doctor, and Gerald admired him for the miracles he worked. He grew up wanting to be like his father, so he worked hard at school to earn scholarships for college.

Graduating from college in 1997, Gerald went straight into Medical School. Prepared adequately by his father's experience, Gerald soared through Medical School and soon entered internship. In 2001, he began his three years of residency at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. These were easily the most difficult years of his education so far. Working at one of world's leading hospitals, Gerald was subjected to all manner of medical emergencies, scientific breakthroughs, violence, and even corruption within the system.

In 2004, when Dr. Furman received his medical license, he left the New York Presbyterian Hospital and went back to his hometown of Westwood to open his own clinic, partly to get away from the violence of the city and partly because his hometown was in need. Ten years later, after his clinic had become very successful due to his revolutionary policies, he went back to New York to open a new clinic for run-down parts of the city, hoping to find and make change for the better.

What he found was the violence and chaos he had left behind those years ago. Disheartened by all of this, though still dedicated to providing services to his fellow humans, Gerald worked as best as he could to build a strong foundation for a new clinic in the city where it was desperately needed, growing depressed the longer he stayed.

It was during a much-needed vacation overseas when Gerald's joy was rekindled by the event that changed humankind forever: the coming of the Combine. Though the initial wave was fearsome and destructive, what it left in its wake (in his eyes) was peace and prosperity. All mankind had to do was reach out and embrace it.

Though now trapped away from home, Gerald is still dedicated to serving his fellow citizens through the opportunities provided by the Benefactors. Gerald wishes to make a new home here and join the ranks of the Civil Workers Union as a medical worker, putting his skills to use to serve his fellow citizens and the Universal Union together.

Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Re: Role-Playing Music

I patrolled to this for as long as I had ever been involved with CG.

Ah, one of the best zombie movies evar.

I guess I'll have to start finding some good music to play to. I hadn't ever really considered keeping music playing in the background.

Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Re: 2-3 Paragraphs on a simple subject?
« on: February 05, 2012, 11:11:00 PM »
Allow me to provide a completely impromptu 2-3 paragraphs as an example:

Quote
Joe Shmoe had always been the little guy in life; whether it was being the "baby" in his family, constantly being looked down upon by his four siblings, or being bullied in school between classes, he was always forced into the dirt by people who thought themselves better than he was. Even when he graduated high school and tried to get jobs, he always received minimum payment and never got any promotions. Whether this was a result of his seemingly innate ability to draw the worst out of people, or from a deflated self-confidence he'd developed since his childhood, he didn't know.

Then the Seven Hour War came.

At first, Joe thought the Combine were just an intergalactic bully, come to push another race around. But as time passed, Joe began to appreciate the enforcement of the Combine's laws. He realized they weren't simply bossing other people around; they were bringing order to the universe. After Joe finally began to adapt to life in City 45, he started actively participating in the Loyalist Program. Now, he wants to do more than just obey the Combine and help others see the good in them; he wants to be an active part of the force bringing peace to the world. As Joe finishes his application to join the Combine Civil Authority, he feels joy knowing that, should he be accepted, he won't have to be the little guy anymore.

I'd be hard-pressed to say that your character's reason for wanting to join the CCA isn't important. Just by typing out these few paragraphs, I know how to roleplay as Joe Shmoe -- he's probably very eager to take part in being a CP unit. He'd look up to the higher authority with respect, seeing them as role-models for him to follow.

Hope that helps. Don't take this part of the process lightly.

Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Re: First Impressions on the Server.
« on: February 04, 2012, 07:05:28 PM »
I was wrongfully detained for "Level 2 Trespassing" today. After seeing and reporting an armed citizen inside the D6 tunnel, CP came running (about 15 minutes after the report). After said citizen opened fire, they locked down the hardpoint, but not before arresting me.

I didn't find out until 30 minutes after being held why I was arrested; another unit kindly informed me as she was requesting permission to release me. The unit who arrested me did no RP (spam-pushing me into the cell as I typed a /me) and ignore several inquiries, both IC and OOC, as to why I was being detained.

I'm not mad about being arrested, but it was annoying to lose roleplaying time to being arrested for a reason which has already been stated in this thread as not a valid reason for arrest. I'm trying to reach Loyalist status, but it seems to be getting harder and harder to earn points legitimately.

Civil Workers Union / Re: About Rags and stations.

Question:
Are players with ToolTrust allowed to spawn their own rags/buckets and RP cleaning on their own? Or do we have to receive permission before doing so?

Social Discussion / Re: Extremely Strange Re-occuring Dream
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:59:13 PM »
What you may not realize is that these are repressed memories from your secret-agent past, which have been hidden away in your mind by the people from that same facility you dream about escaping.

Nah, just kidding. Sure is weird though.

I remember having several recurring nightmares when I was younger (yes, recurring nightmares. It sucked). Except for one, each dream veered off once (and only once) from its usual 'story' and something else happened (usually the dream lasted longer) before I woke up. They're all extremely weird (weirder than your dream) so I won't recount them.

I haven't had any of those dreams in years. Funny how the mind can hang onto one dream like that, though.

Social Discussion / Re: My father is dead.
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:52:48 PM »
I'm very sorry to hear about this, silent.

I know this is probably a sensitive subject, but if you want an answer, I'll try to give you the best one I can.

While it seems your father wasn't the greatest family man (which is a sad thing to hear -- a person's connection to their family is the strongest relationship they have, whether good or bad) it's still a sad thing to hear that another human being has left this world.

Every person in this world has a right to be mourned, even if it's because they didn't get a chance to leave a good impression on the people close to them.

I'm sorry for your loss, silent.

Send me a message some time if you want to chat.

News and Announcements / Re: Server Downtime

Day 3 without HL2RP
I'm beginning to swagger like a CP when I walk around now and walk with a permanent fist in my right hand.
Im looking around every corner for overwatch and  hopefuly a can of beans.

I've started dreaming about cheese.

On another note, there should definitely be some kind of compensation from the host for such a long downtime.

Guides / Re: Play to lose!
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:45:38 AM »
Eg.

C: Citizen swings the plank as hard as he can at the CP's head.
U: The CP attempts to duck underneath the plank.
C: Citizen rolls 60 out of 100
U: The CP rolls 50 out of 100
U: The plank connects with the CP's head, hitting his faceplate and temporarily stunning him.
--Since the CP has better knowledge of the durability of his armor, he understands that a plank to the face isn't enough to fully incapacitate him. But enough to stun him for a bit. So by playing to lose he knows that if he has just been stunned, he wouldn't be able to strike back immediately.

U:[LOOC] Ok, since I just got stunned you'd have another chance to hit me or run or something.
C:[LOOC] If I ran would your character be able to chase me?
U:[LOOC] Probably not.
C: The citizen turns away from the stunned CP and sprints down the alley.

While this is a perfectly valid use of rolling with PTL, in my opinion, it's still not as "efficient" as a purely /me'd fight.
Comparing two fights I had recently on another HL2RP server:
I was cornered in some apartments after being chased by my friend, a CP unit on said server. We had a fight using /roll that looked a little something like this:

*Citizen throws a punch at CP's chest.
*CP tries to dodge.
*Citizen rolls 69.
*CP rolls 30.
*CP gets hit, then swings stunstick at Citizen.
*Citizen tries to dodge left.
*Citizen rolls 20.
*CP rolls 72.
*Citizen gets hit and stumbles back...

Now, don't get me wrong -- it was still fun. But it kinda felt like a bad RPG, and not nearly as enjoyable as the following fight, when backup showed up:

*Citizen throws a punch at the side of Recruit's head.
*Recruit steps back and the blow glances off his helmet. Recruit retaliates by bringing his stunstick down on Citizen's shoulder.
*Citizen takes the hit, going down on one knee. He quickly stands up, throwing another punch at the Recruit's chest.
*Recruit is hit and stumbles back before stepping forward again...

Roleplay-wise, the same amount of action is going on, but it was much less choppy and felt more engaging. It helped that we were both willing to take hits instead of just dealing them out.

Hypothetically speaking, someone could only dish out hits (keeping with the fight scenario) but if the other person is willing to go with it, it can still be enjoyable.

Anyway...
Thanks to the OP for giving an in-depth description of PTL. More people should use it! :D

Guides / Re: FearRP and PainRP!
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:03:05 AM »
It really is a little disconcerting to see citizens gathering in groups around CP, and even ignoring bullets being fired into the ground at their feet in an attempt to make them go away.

I actually had a very enjoyable fight using PainRP on another server recently with a recruit, with me as the rebellious citizen. Even the DvL, who was simply spectating the fight, said he enjoyed it. (They were also much more lenient in their punishment afterward than CG's CCA...)

This is a great guide! Thanks for the tips.

Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Re: First Impressions on the Server.
« on: January 27, 2012, 06:24:46 PM »
As soon as I get enough loyalist points on one of my characters, I'll apply for Civil Protection, hopefully them viewing the fact that I Roleplay almost everything (Unless its a minge running in which I'll stop them then get an admin or try to teach the new player) then maybe they can learn from example of how similar ranking individuals can roleplay to instead of taking such horrible shortcuts.

^ This.

Part of the reason I'd like to become CP (when I can actually earn some points) is for better roleplaying.

Glad to see someone's leading the charge, Shanaro. ;D
