Building a computer, what parts to get?
« on: May 28, 2012, 06:54:10 PM »
I'm building a gaming computer for the first time and I have no idea what parts to buy and such, I have around 6K to spend once I obtain the money. To all the people who have built a computer or know good parts please reply with some suggestions (Links are preferred).

6k is plenty,  THIS guide is pretty nice to use as an example or base for a computer (ie you may not need a large hard drive so can spend money on maybe an SSD or more RAM or something)

reddit appears to have a more technical spread sheet but it looks kinda outdated plus it may not be much use to you if you don't really know much, but I'll post it here anyway: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuVJ_zCP34bkdF9PcjZmMHdtVURCZ3BLcjdHYmIyWEE&hl=en_US#gid=0

Whenever someone says "What parts should I get?" I always reply with the same answer. SO:

-How much are you willing to spend?
-Do you want quality or lower price?
-Are you going to do any GPU or CPU overclocking?
-Is it for developing, gaming, or both?
-Do you plan to take it places like LAN parties or sit on your floor for months?
-Do you plan to expand on your system if your budget is too low or upgrade in the future?
-Do you REALLY care a shit ton on your case?
 >If so, are you willing to spend a little extra time customizing a cheap case?

Answer these and I can help you decide what you want.

That answers one of spatula's questions.

What do you want it for, you could save money and spend about 1/2k and keep the rest, or you could spend it all if your deving shit, it depends what he wants to do.
what

then the setup i linked you is perfect xD

680's are the best card on the market (besides 690's but they are like 1k each)

Assuming he want's to spend that much. If he's not doing much for developing, why would he need 32 GB of ram? 8GB is PLENTY! Also, if its because he has a high budget, instead of giving him top of the line everything, give him 2 top of the line graphics cards, a top of the line CPU, and a liquid cooling unit. Also. You forgot an OS.

Ninja. Answer the list I provided you and I'll give you an alternate and you can choose what you want between the two.

Answer these and I can help you decide what you want.
1. I'm going to lower my range to 5K.
2. Quality
3. If possible, first computer build so I have no idea how.
4. Gaming, streaming, and Video stuff.
5. Stay in my room.
6. Maybe, I don't know.
7. I enjoy LED Lights, and being able to see inside of it.
7.5. Sure
(To add, I want HIGH performance.)

4. Gaming, streaming, and Video stuff.
Developing videos or just watching them?

There's an ivy bridge i7 which uses the on-cpu graphics card for extremely fast video rendering but I forgot which one, it's still perfect for gaming too, you should look into that (someone will probably post it)
