City Administrator / CA application
« on: September 07, 2011, 01:55:13 AM »
I don't know if I'm being pre-empitive, or being a bit ignorant, so feel free to correct me if I am, but since RLTK is no longer a server administrator, who is going to look after the CA applications?

< PFC [508th_PIR]Jacknife > 's City Administrator application

What is your CA's name? (All CAs' names start with Dr.) Dr Artyom Dityatev

Age:15

Do you have past experience? If so then where?

As a city administrator? No, but I have fulfil similar roles on different games.

How long have you played Catalyst-Gaming: Half-life 2 roleplay?

Two months.

How many hours do you spend a day on the server? (When it is up)

I spend most of my time playing on weekends (AUS), so In the week (Mon – Thurs) I do not play at all (Or little, I do go on every once and a while), but on weekends I play 7+ hours a day (If possible, some days are busy, while others aren’t). This increases in the school holidays, with 7+ hours a day.

Are you available on weekends and in American time and early/late European time?

I set an alarm so I wake up at approx 7AM EST (GMT 10+), so I am on in this time. Additionally, I play on times where most CA’s do not play – The night shift. I find that CA’s would really spice up the often dry roleplay at this time.

Do people consider you a good roleplayer?

Without sounding immodest, yes, I think I am a good roleplayer. I’d have to get someone else to testify HOW good I am, however, as I would not be able to fairly gauge my own roleplaying ability.

Are you a good listener?

Being able to listen is the first step to being able to speak.

Do you have good grammar?

I am, to admit, somewhat of a grammar Nazi at times. However, my spelling does not meet such high standards. This is something I am seeking to improve, as now I often re-read my work multiple times for spelling mistakes if I am writing something important.

Have you ever been banned?

I can truthfully and happily say that I have never been banned from any Garry’s Mod server.

Do you know HL canon inside and out.

Once again, without sounding immodest, I do.

Write a 5 paragraph backstory of your character that reveals their qualifications for the position (One paragraph = 4 sentences)

Artyom Dityatev was a thinker. Not the statue that used to sit purposefully in Paris, rather, he had an unearthly near addiction to thinking. He was born in Australia 1986, on August the 22nd. His father and mother were Russians; one in the generation of the few men and woman that escaped the clutches of the USSR long before it was formed. One of the lucky few. They had integrated into Australia easily in the 1900’s, as European’s were embraced with open arms while other races were cut off from the country.  Things had changed in the years leading up to his birth. A red tide spilled over Europe, filling men and woman with fear of communism. His family, now well established in Australia, were socially excluded from the community, instead only living and talking among their extended family and small community members. Artyom was born and lived for the early part of his life with a sense of isolation within his community; he was automatically excluded for something that was out of his control. For some people, this would set them up for a life of misery, as they will not enjoy the social incites that most people felt every day. However, Artyom was different. He tried harder.

One particular incident stood out among the rest. He was sitting down on a bench at his school. He was eleven at this age, and the Berlin wall seemed fit to collapse. Not that anyone seemed to care. Nothing changed for him. A boy walked up to him. He looked small and meek, but he compensated by being witty and sharp.
“Why don’t you go back to communist Russia, red pig?” Not as sharp or as witty as he thought. Artyom looked up at the boy, and did something he didn’t expect. He turned on his casual demeanour. He offered him a piece of his lunch. A cookie.
“You want this?” He waved it under his nose like bait. The boy was disarmed by this, and Artyom could see he was preparing another witty remark. He, instead, got in earlier.
“After all, sharing is caring comrade.” He put on the most ridiculous Russian accent that it made the other boy laugh, and involuntarily take his cookie. Within the space of a minute, they were no longer enemies. However, they were a long way from fiends.
Artyom grew up with an air of casual confidence, which prevented him from being stereotypically branded as “That Russian...” It was not only his demeanour that made him special. The thing that made him special was that he got bored.
Being bored can be one of the worst experiences a man can feel. You feel a sense of helplessness and strange uncaring throughout the experience. However, Artyom thought of ways to tackle this. His mind was constantly at work, the gears turning in his head like a clock ticking endlessly; tick by tick. He was a born and bred philosopher.

Once he graduated from school he went to Durham university – famous for its philosophy course, and majored in anthropology and government studies, planning to be an analytical journalist by following up with an arts degree. However, he decided to do government and international studies, majoring in arts (English) and French, to become a diplomat. He then obtained first class honours, and got his Doctorate on the study of Authority, mainly basing it on the fallacy of Argument from Authority, as to set him up to be a high ranking diplomat capable of manipulating his task force. During this time, he tried out and became the vice captain of the universities debating and public speaking team, further enhancing his currently incredible speaking skills. He completed all of his courses when he was 28.
Young and untrialed, he started the process of joining the diplomatic force in Australia. While in this process, he started writing his book “Rise of Authority”, which was a book about how the idea of authority developed – from the tribal authority of pre-history, to the pharaoh’s of ancient Egypt, from the feudal system to the modern day system, tracing a trend of the average workman loosing and then regaining his power within the government system. This book was nearly completed, and never published.

Exert from Rise of Authority

"...There are many different theories about the behaviours of mankind. Some people have a generally good view on it, thinking that man does not want to be ignorant and will strive to make sure that he is not being shrouded with misinformation. Some take the negative approach, thinking instead that mankind is more hedonistic, not caring about the consequences of his actions, or the motives behind it, rather the potential reward it brings. Evidence for both of these idea’s are scattered around history, but have been linked to the extend to show an overwhelming majority. Instead, it has shown that the opinion of the matter is based on personal, cultural, and contextual matters, and that the changing opinion has more of a say in the matter than the actual nature of mankind itself."

He also began planning for a smaller book “Rise of Nationhood”, which would talk about how the idea of a “Nation” developed and how it relates to modern day conquest. Only early chapter drafts and plans were drawn.

Exert from the plan of “Rise of Nationhood

"...To truly conquer a country, you need three things.
-   Physical invasion of a country: Done by occupying armies holding a state by force. This has become one of the most common types of modern day invasion.
-    Financial invasion of a country - which is done by effectively controlling a country by its imports and exports. This has only come in effect in the modern day, as globalisation has created instant access to global finance.
-   Cultural invasion of a country – which can only be achieved when a country culturally accepts another country as theirs. This has not been achieved in the history of mankind.
All three are needed for a conquest, but all three are rarely used."

As he was in the process of becoming a diplomat and writing his books, the invasion began. At first it was a thrill. What better way to think about conquest, authority and the enslavement of the working class than by living in it? But thrill was soon replaced with the feeling that he knew all too well and hated all too much. Boredom.

He had nothing anymore to occupy him. He no longer had his dimly lit study, where papers were strewn across the table in a strange attempt at organisation. He no longer had people to talk to intelligently, as people often mistook his attempts at arguments to stir up trouble. He kept thinking about anything he could, the invasion offering a creative playground but surrounding it with childproof walls. He couldn’t stand it. He remembers the dispatch well, the blaring and echoic voice that hollered to him. It beckoned him to come closer; it beckoned him to join. It dangled an opportunity under his nose he could not refuse. A get out of jail free card. He remembered the moment that he grasped it, its sides seemingly soft and fragile, but angelic in texture. This is what he wanted to do. He took the card, and played his deck. All he could do was hope that the cards were high enough.

As Martiner said, all we can do is support you if you ask for it. I understand you've taken a big step by talking about it, and you'll be glad you did it. If you feel you need to talk to us, feel free. We're not going to be able to help if you don't ask us, and you'll be glad you asked.

I gave back the loyalist points because, quite obviously, this was a miscommunication, and I'm not going to charge this person with possession if he was told it was legal. This was our problem, not his, and should not impact him negatively.

That is one of a few examples why RCT's should have harder applications..
They need to know how to RP and what to do, an RCT is just a man in the suit, everyone knows.
That man still has a lot of feelings, he suffers, he has sympathy etc. Yet they think they're boss and smack them because they're so washed and so controlled..

I know how to RP Martiner - You just don't know my char's background.

1: He was already a hard person before he joined the CCA (Was completly fine with Level 3 verdicts, and was only slightly hesistant with level 2).

2: He had proformed 2 amputates that day under the command of the NOVA DvL (Which was some of the best RP i'd ever done.) My characer reacted the 2nd time with anger rather than remorce - He was angry at himself for doing all this.

3: The person he accidently beat to death he was angry at as well - He'd stabbed 2 officers inc himself, and two civilians. He vented all the anger of the past two days.

Additionally, it was the other guy who suggested that for better RP. I didn't go DERPDERP and fire stunstick lazers, I did one final hit and we pretended that he was killed from that. It made realy good RP, and developed my character realy well.

And finally, speaking of bad RP, 376 wanted to revive him and torture him more. We had to pretty much restrain him from doing it.

I was the RCT in BOTH of thoes situations. I was a bit saddistic because my char was almsot angry from two amputations in one day, and then from the knife wound. He just sort of lost it again. I'm planning on my char to not become more ruthless, but more professional as he get promoted. When he's 04 He'll wince at amputations, but still proform them.

I'd arrived at the building in the late afternoon. The hustle and bustle of the city rung in my ears, and I could feel the wind from the endless tide of cars that streamed behind me. The building was inconspicuous from outlook, with cream colored walls and basic brown and dusty doors, but it in fact housed the BBC Bureau for Baghdad, Iraq. I took a deep sigh, and entered. I was struck on how basic the entire place was. There was a security guard sitting lazily on a wooden chair, and there was a receptionist typing intently at her oddly old computer. A surge of doubt entered my mind. Had I entered the wrong place? The monotonous sound of continuous typing stopped, and the receptionist's head snapped up. Her face was cold and stony, and she stared directly into my eyes, bending what free will I had left. I reluctantly asked my question.
"Is this..." I stuttered a bit. Not like me at all.
"Yes, yes it is..."  Her stony look turned into a sweet smile, and she gestured me to the stairs.
"Second floor, to the left. Knock before you enter. And smile, there's no need to be afraid." I smiled a little to hard at her, and she tutted as I moved past here and to the stairs. Intent on getting the last comment, I said before I left
"With a face like that, I think there's full reason to be afraid" I tried to scurry away, but her comment caught up to me.
"With a man bag, I wouldn't be surprised if you were intimidated by the rats!" I hesitated. Rats? I hated rats. And it was a satchel, not a man bag. I continued up the stairs, that looked like they could do with some vacuuming to say the least. The building appeared completely empty, the stairs being small and cramped and my steps echoing as I jogged slightly up the stairs. I opened the door to the second floor, and saw a long corridor, and positioned myself in front of the door. I cleared my throat, tightened my tie, straightened my suit and hesitated for a few seconds. I hadn't relay expected to get this far. It all seemed a bit of a dream. I'd been swept all the way here so far. Was I realy cut out for this? As I framed this thought, someone quickly opened the door from the other side, and looked surprised to see me.
"Ah, Mr Saunders? How are you? Why didn't you knock?" I stared at him stunned for a second. He was a bright sort of person, he reguarded me with instant surprise and general happiness. He was in his late 30's, had slight stubble around his face, and had hair down to his shoulders. He was a little bit taller than me, so probably about 6'3. He had blue eyes, and his hair was a light shade of brown. I responded with slight hesitance.
"Uhh, Well thank you sir!" I replied, deliberately ignoring the reason why I didn't knock.
"Come on in" He said, gesturing me to a chair inside. I sat down in the chair opposing his desk, the warm coals from the stove fire in the center of his room burning my right arm but making my right side freezing.
"So, there's only one more thing to sign" He quickly thumbed out some paper from his desk, and put them on his desk with a pen on top.
"By signing this you acknowledge that any psychological damage, periods of no sex, periods of too much sex, images of horrific nature, stress beyond belief, and the possibility of kidnapping, torture and death." Holy shit. These guys don't screw around. He was still talking, outlining all the horrific things that could go wrong, and why it wasn't his responsibility. He was gesturing me to sign now. Dear god.
"Are you alright? You seem a bit shaky" He was right. I felt a bit hot and pale, and my hands were shaking slightly as I took the pen from his outstretched hand.
"Better than ever" I said, feeling the opposite. I leaned over and took a look at the page. It was pretty much what he had just said, but in legal terms. At the bottom, room for his signature and room for mine. He'd already signed it. I pressed my pen into the page, and wrote my signature slowly. Artyom Saunders

OOC Name: [508th_PIR] Jacknife

IC Character Name: Jackson Parks

1) Please write a minimum of 3 paragraphs OOC'ly detailing why your character wishes to join the Combine Civil Authority and what lead your character to do so.

Jackson was born to trust. Whether he trusted the right people or not was up to opinion, but he put his trust in something or someone, and he didn't let go. This wasn't something he'd thought up consciously. It was bred into him by his father, who worked in an advertising agency. Jackson remembered going to his father's work, and seeing all the posters and billboards of the happiest people alive - the consumer. This since of false trust led him down many paths. He sometimes trusted the right people, and that made him a much better person. More often than not, however, he was lead into trouble.

The invasion happened when he was 17. His eyes marvelled at the luminescent colours of the portal storm that flashed brilliantly around him. He saw machines of war seemingly fall from the sky, and man fall from its once high place. It was luck that leads him to be alive, and to place trust in the CCA. He was being mugged at the time of the portal storm. Two men were brutally assaulting him, making wild and angry swipes at his head and chest. The combine burst down the street, and fired their drums in a mechanic and calloused way. The men stumbled and fell as a pool of blood dripped out of their skin. He, however, was untouched. The combine simply looked at him and ran away. He didn't know whether it was pity, remorse, or just plain luck that saved him. But as soon as the combine won the war, he knew that he wanted to be a part of that team that worked so fluidly and quickly to save his life.

He strived to join the CCA, as he placed his trust in their supreme ability to govern the world. The propaganda that surrounded him consistently only added fuel to his burning desire to join the CCA. He became an avid loyalist, cleaning the sidewalks, helping the CCA, and doing everything he could to be seen as a dependable citizen. Finally, after a few years of labouring, he was awarded with a loyalist armband. He was overwhelmed. He could finally become a part of the organisation he looked up to and trusted.

An underlying reason why he was joining the CCA was that Jackson had the desire to be accepted by a group. Jackson lived a mostly solitary life as a child, as his father's work often brought him all over the world. He found the feeling of moving to a new place and knowing no-one frightening. Jackson hated moving around, but his father had to keep working, and work was hard pressed to find. Jackson often tried to seek out groups to try and gain loyalty and trust within them. This is why he trusted people so easily - It was easier for him get trust if he trusted the other people in the first place.

2) Please detail your characters traits. (Eg, Pure, Lawful, Trustworthy)

- Logical thinker: He will be given a large problem, and have the ability to break it down into smaller tasks and prioritise them in order to get the larger goal done.
- Dependable: If you ask him to do a task, he will do all in his ability to achieve it.
- Morally susceptible: He is like a mould that is able to be changed by the people around him. He will become as nice or as calloused as the people he has been with or is being with.
- Decisive: Despise being morally susceptible, he is able to thrive in leadership positions due to his quick reactions to all problems. He is not suited to a high command position, but is perfectly capable of positions that require leadership.

3) Please provide 2 paragraphs about what you are expecting the Combine Civil Authority to be like for you and your character?

(OCC - What I think)
I've played as the CCA on other server before it went under, so I think it’ll be like that. From what I've seen however, it's shaping up to be something fantastic. Formation, tactics and training are all something I find appealing, and so I can't wait to receive and hopefully one day gives training and improve tactics. I think I'll enjoy it a lot, from its comeradine to its strict systems it sounds extremely appealing for a man such as myself. I'm also doing it for my character. My character strives to be accepted. He wants that feeling that he is a part of a coherent team and that he can co-ordinate together. He doesn't feel he fits anywhere else.

(IC - What my char thinks)
It's my char's dream to be in the CCA. He understands that there might be challenges that await him, or that the CAA might not quite be what he expected, but he has chosen this direction and is willing to go headstrong into any challenges that wait. He expects a comeradine that he will find enjoyable - he likes being within and co-operating with a team. He also likes the strict discipline within the CCA. He knows that he will be rewarded for good work, and punished for bad work. Everything becomes a lot easier if he joins the CCA.

4) Please provide a detailed back-story from an out-of-character perspective on your applying character. This section must be detailed and consist of a minimum of 300 words.

Note: Having read 1) is presumed knowledge

Jackson had hoped to be a doctor when he had grown up. He had watched all the medical TV shows every day after school, and he had laughed gleefully as a child when he got his fake plastic doctor kit. These wishes never materialised as his life was turned around by the 7 hour war. He still wanted to be a doctor, as the methodical approach to helping people appealed to him greatly, but he would not be able to do this in the new world. Instead, he picked up what he could from citizens or the CCA. It became one of his primary hobbies - to collect medical knowledge and remember it.

Jackson was not a part of any social group - He didn't really conform to anything at all. He didn't even conform to the non-conformists. He was stuck in a limbo because of his father’s often unreliable working arrangements (See 1) for detail). He then tried to join any group he could. When that didn't work, he modelled himself off one group that struck him to the heart. He chose his groups carefully and concentrated hard to get into it. This worked to an extent, as he was solidifying his character and not becoming such a malleable person.

Jackson had made it to City 8 by chance. He was being re-located to C18 when the new re-location took place, meaning that he had two straight relocations in a row. He was tired and very hungry when he arrived to C8. To add on to this, he did not receive rations for two days due to a glitch in the distribution cycle mainframe. After recovering from his brief bout of hunger, he strove to help the CCA in this city strive.

He finally got his armband when he was assisting an officer transferring an unconscious man. The man was beating for civil disobedience, and while they were getting him into a position where they could lift him, Jackson offered to carry the man to wherever he needed to be carried. The officer quickly acknowledged his loyal deed and gave him the points required to receive a loyalist armband. Jackson was overjoyed at the prospect at finally being able to join Civil Protection, and after thanking the officer probably, he bounded off to prepare to apply for the CCA.

(Real in game experience)
His want to join the CCA solidified when he was assaulted by a man in the street with a sharp weapon, penetrating his stomach. The CCA came to the rescue and amputated the man, while giving Jackson medical attention in the medical bay. One of the RCT's struck his fancy especially. He helped Jackson recover well and made sure he was well attended. He soon staggered out of the hospital with the primary goal to join the CCA as soon as he was fit to.

OOC Details

1. How long have you played on role-playing servers in general?
4 Years

2. How long have you played on serious servers? 1.5 Years

3. How long have you played on Catalyst Gaming?
Close to 2 weeks.

4. What Time zone are you in?
GMT +10

5. In what country do you live?
Australia (Mate)

6. How old are you? 15

7. What’s your most memorable quality RP experience?
On an old HL2RP server in Australia, I was working with a combine patrol while we were being inspected by an Overwatch commander. While we were patrolling, we were ambushed by a rebel group. We fought for about 30 mins using RP, shots being traded both sides as we finally managed to withdraw with 2/5 casualties, and the overwatch commander unscathed. We were all commended for our fighting, and we held a funeral service for our casualties. One of the best RP days of my life.

8. Do you consider yourself a good listener?
This question could be perceived in two ways, so I'll clarify. I do listen well if someone is saying something, regardless if I have a different or opposite disposition towards it. However, I will not hesitate to voice my concerns if I have any. This does not mean I will challenge leadership IC. My char and even I have respect for the higher ups in the CCA and sometimes you must trust their judgement, and will always listen to what they have to say and acknowledge it at the least. I feel it is important to point out in this however that I may have differing views on how I should work IC or OCC (Not that I probably will, but...), and that listening to me is just as important as listening to someone else.
