General Discussion / why (garry's mod) roleplay is garbage
« on: April 09, 2013, 06:04:00 PM »
garry's mod is a really cool game
but we're using it as if it's an irc channel

we really should take advantage of the game, perhaps using items and such.
space station 13 does this very well, and that's why it's insanely fun, as well it's silliness, but that's a different story.

can we actually use garry's mod for serious roleplay perhaps?
just a little more LARP i suppose

Suggestions / Space Station 13 server

Space Station 13 is a paranoia-laden roleplaying game set against the backdrop of a nonsensical, metal death trap masquerading as a space station. The game is 2D, sprite, and tile-based. It's written in BYOND, which accounts for its attrocious controls and limited graphical capability. Despite its shortcomings, it's amazingly fun for what it is. Prepare to lose many hours to it.

These guys are pretty great.
They're Norwegian but play in the U.S.

I've been to their live performance and it was pretty great.

Suggestions / Multiplayer Theory
« on: October 12, 2012, 11:48:33 PM »
Right, hello and welcome to this thread.
This is going to be long-ish, so if you have a short attention, sorry, you're gonna have to read it.

Today, I want to talk about Multiplayer Theory and why a lot of these suggestions for gamemodes in here wont work.

Gamemodes. What they need and what people want.

A simple goal. Like in TTT, people need to find the traitor and kill him before he kills others. Quite simple.
Something to gain. Experience points? Money? Items? Who knows. Just something to be given to the player for completing above goal.
An outlet for things gained. Hats, spells, perks, what ever. Something that people can show and gloat about. Keeps them coming back.
Skill, not power. Make some room for skill! In GMR2, the one with the best car would always win. Try adding some debuffs to overpowered things.
Fast-paced. People have short attention spans. Yeah. It's true. You gotta keep action flying. Like FortWars for example.
Not repetitive. Doing the same thing over and over, beating citizens for running, getting shot in the knee for failing to salute. It all happens too often and it just falls into a routine. TTT however always changes the terrorist, keeping it fresh and exciting.
The right staff for the right gamemode. I don't think someone who's administrated OCRP suddenly moves to administrating HL2RP is going to have some difficulties. Make sure your admins that you select for said server are competent in the gamemode, for example how to do X instead of replying 'idk.'
User equality. If you run a jailbreak, don't restrict guards to only people who donate. That ruins the whole point of the game. Users who don't donate and start out with restricted rights feel like they don't want to play, since they don't have the money.
Going out of your way. Don't just do the bare minimum. Add something fun for the players to discover. The Secret Phrase for OCRP was pretty awesome as it kept you going until people leaked it. Make easter eggs!

That's basically it. The whole gamemode really needs to cater to people without large attention spans, as I bet you the average Garry's Mod player doesn't have.

The reason DarkRP is so popular is because you can just go shotcop everywhere instead of actually roleplaying, which occasionally gets boring as it falls into the repetitiveness category. The reasons why many of our non-RP gamemodes that failed could be listed under these categories.

FortWars: unpredictable and really fun, but there was nothing to put your cash into except classes and upgrades. What about an item finding system like in TF2 or purchasable hats?

GMR2: The overpowered thing. Pretty much listed the reason in the example.

Morbus: This was really fun, but again like FortWars, there was no real outlet or anything you gain by winning/playing.

TTT: I don't really know why this one flopped. People were too busy with the roleplay that we have to actually join TTT. That's the thing, you need to lure people out of roleplay to a fun, interesting and original idea.

I appreciate you reading the whole thing.
If you wouldn't mind, giving a "yes" or "no" on what you think would be nice!

General Discussion / Refugee Camp v1 (a forum rp)
« on: June 15, 2012, 02:00:25 AM »
OOC:
Well, I know everyone loves some good 'ol fashioned forum roleplay, so I thought I'd write a backstory and make a thread. Here are a few guidelines and stuff:

Rules:
No powergaming!
No metagaming!
OOC text must be enclosed in (( )) e.g. (( inb4appdenied ))
Me must be done with * e.g. *Nick Farlioni steps into his Humvee, turns the key in the ignition and puts the petal to the metal.
It must be done with ** e.g. **The tent has fell over everyone.
Don't be a dick!

Backstory:
The year is 2016 and you're in Syria. The village you are in has been pillaged and everyone is sent to a refugee camp. As you walk, you see bodies of women, children and men. Their eyes open, blankly staring into space; their faces slowly dripping blood. Drop, drop, drop. The regime has not surrendered and they are still fighting and the militias massacre villages not sparing anyone. You're walking on dry ground, bare foot with barely any clothes on you. You can smell burning rubber from the fresh mortar strikes. A few stones get lodged in your foot on the way, but you continue walking. A few hours in the excruciatingly hot sun, with some wild animals here and there, you finally arrive at the refugee camp. There are already thousands of people there. It smells and it is very dirty and everyone is deathly thin. There is a makeshift house that the aid workers have setup to guide the newly arrived guests. They assign you a tent and give you a small piece of corn bread. Families are split up and they cry, but go on their seperate ways, hoping one day, they will finally see freedom.

"For Freedom", an armed rebel group. must apply!

Good luck, don't catch malaria.
Also, if you have any edits or something for the backstory, OOC it.

Tyrone Jackson, 22, was born in Utah, USA; the armpit of america. He wasn't a genius, nor was he stupid. He was just your average everyday man. On April 23rd of 2015, he flipped on the television and turned it to CNN. He stared intently at the glowing "idiot-box." The TV just kept showing videos from YouTube that Syrians have posted. He was horrified to see villages burning, children dead and women murdered. Sure, he'd heard about this from his colleagues and family, but he never really took the initiative to learn about it. That's when he decided to go, to go to Syria. He hired a private pilot to fly him over to Iraq and he runs over the border to Syria. From the help of locals, he gets around and starts a refugee camp. Of course, he wasn't alone. He brought over some of his friends: Jeremy L'Amiah, Kokoa Deazayuki and Donald Reagan. Before crossing into Iraq, they went to REI and bought some twenty tents. The cashier asked him "Whatcha doin with all them tents?"
"Helping the people in Syria," Tyrone replied, assuring himself that he really is going and will help these people. The cashier scanned his tents, his non-perishable camping food, five first aid kits and some lanterns. Now that they arrived to the place they wanted to setup camp, they setup the aid worker tent and tossed a first aid it in it and lit a lantern. They had no means of protection, but they found some people from "For Freedom." So now they have arms, tents, food and first aid. The commander of the little "For Freedom" unit had a radio on him and heard reports of a bombing. They got into their Jeep and rode off, and soon enough, we had about ten to twenty refugees in the camp. ((Someone should make a char with these first refugees!))

Sarah Petrosvky's Civil Authority Application

OOC Name: Tim

IC Character Name: Sarah Petrosvky

1) Please write a minimum of 3 paragraphs OOC'ly detailing why your character wishes to join the Combine Civil Authority and what lead your character to do so.
Sarah Petrosvky wishes to join the CCA because, well... ever since she was a child, she loved systems. She loved to go to school and organize her desk everyday, and make her own games. It was exciting for everything to be uniform.

When she grew up and became an adult, she still had the same love for systems. She got a job as a city garbage worker, but she loved it anyways. She loved the part where you got to clock in and write how many houses you got.

The Combine showed up after the 7-hour war and she fell in love. She loved how the citizens were stacked up and had CIDs. She was in heaven, she actually thought she died. She now wants a piece of this control, to satisfy the thing she loves with a passion.

2) Please detail your characters traits. (Eg, Pure, Lawful, Trustworthy)
Sarah Petrosvky is five foot, five inches (5' 5") and ways one-hundred and five pounds (105 lbs.) with blue eyes and brown hair pulled back in a ponytail.
Sarah is always loyal, as she loves system and dares defy the system and act out. She has always gone above and beyond during her school life, not only finishing her assignments, but sometimes even asking to ask the teacher if she could grade them and enter them in.

3) Please provide 2 paragraphs about what you are expecting the Combine Civil Authority to be like for you and your character.
For me, I expect the training to be rigorous. I expect it to span multiple days of real-life time and I'm ready for that. Summer break is coming up and I think it is time to get my serious roleplay face on!

Sarah expects to get a piece of control she's always wanted in her life, but with her love of systems comes self-restraint, as that what the Combine requires. She realizes that she may get exciting positions such as getting those non-system-abiding rebels out of existence!

4) Please provide a detailed back-story from an out-of-character perspective on your applying character. This section must be detailed and consist of a minimum of 300 words.
Sarah Petrosvky grew up on a farm in Russia. She loved to take care of the animals, not because they were well... animals, but because she had to write everything down. She had to check which eggs had been taken out of the chicken coop's, which cows have been milked and everything related to that.
Later in Sarah's life, she moved to Moscow and she was blown away as to how much control the government had. She had rarely seen police officers before, but she knew she liked them. She saw the reports they filed, the traffic violation citations they filed and she almost screamed she was so excited. It was as if she was, quite simply, addicted to systems.
She found a job with the city and became a garbage collector. It wasn't the glamorous job that everyone thought they would get when they were in second grade, but she still got a taste of control and systems. If she didn't pickup the trash, some of the houses would start to pile up. She liked that... she liked to play God.
Enter the Combine, they took over and after a while, she was sent to City 45. Unfamiliar with everything, she asked fellow residents and cooperated with officers to everything they said and asked.

5) Have you ever had a CCA character here at Catalyst Gaming?  If so, explain why it was removed.
