My entire fortress was just slaughtered by goblins today D:

What's your guys opinions on texture packs?

Personally I don't use them, I like the casual feel of ASCII art.

I use Mayday's tileset, I've done some crazy shit on DF. I haven't downloaded it though since I reinstalled Windows 7 so I gotta do it again.

Phoebus tileset, I can play with ASCII but it strains my eyes.  I just played around with adv. generation and got a world with around 100k megabeasts/semi-megabeasts

This ought to be a fun world for fortress and adventure mode.

I found this too hard to understand. Normally I don't have problems with games with big learning curves but I had absolutely no idea of what I was doing.

Click to see the original size.
Depending on who you ask, its either a right angle or a backslash.

Johan, I believe Ive found the problem with my crashing. You generate 75k events in 400 years, while I generate over 1 million events in 200-400 years. Mind sending a screen shot of your gen options?

Also, there is nothing like massacring a town with their own spinning blood to the face.
The spinning Urist McBleeder blood strikes Urist McBleeder in the head, fracturing the skull and piercing the brain.
Makes me feel warm inside ^_^

Tried it out a long while ago, quite enjoyed it. Problem is I just got really annoyed with how I was only failing because the controls were so fucking out there.

It's a very steep/right angle learning curve as Deg pointed out, what I did when I started was keep using the key bindings menu to know what button did what and then also used the DF wiki to learn about the buildings, professions (which didn't need explaining really), what was used for what, setting up shit, etc.

Here is the DF Wiki for any new players:

Dafuq man...  I gen like 1 mil events in 5000 years.  I set my world to only gen goblins, kobolds, and dwarves though...

Are you attempting to gen a large world?  I usually gen 35 by 35 or even 17 by 17

Sand is just a floor type. In order to get stone and stuff keep mining down. I recommend using a downward stair at the top then up/down stairs below them and go down about 5-10 levels.

Mesh sizes are fun, making pillars out of very little mountains or making nearly all mountains with scattered valleys.

Islands too.
