Title: The megaupload situation
Post by: Technical Abbreviations on January 19, 2012, 06:17:30 PM
Pre-SOPA takedowns. That is reassuring

http://techland.time.com/2012/01/19/feds-shut-down-megaupload-com-file-sharing-website/

People could, in theory, if they wanted to, technically, IN THEORY, use it to pirate something, and we THINK they might be.
Shut it down and arrest all involved.

Discuss.

Most of the files on megauplaod are pirated. Nuff said. As Garry Newman said on twitter:
"The only people complaining about the megaupload shutdown are the ones who cant download their TV Shows/Movies."

Its more of the principle of the thing. I dont use megaupload, but its that the government can shut down whatever they please.

Even if Megaupload was shit it is still very bad that SOPA hasn't even passed and they are already taking down sites, Megaupload is just the first of many sites to be taken down.

Like stated here, SOPA has not even passed yet, so that is not the reason this was taken down.

Oh well, i still want megaupload back. I used it to upload shit. Mainly because of the ability to remove the files again.

They deserved it to be honest. I have been following the situation. Megavideo and that movieupload thing is bad. Pirating is bad so is SOPA and PIPA. I have little respect for people that pirate.

the only thing illegal was people uploading shit to megaupload, it wasnt the owners duty to check every file and determine weather or not it's legal, that's why it has a TOS, the shitty us government is just trying to control the internet

No, it is technically the sites responsibility. BUT! it has been a site for uploading for a long time now. AKA pirating movies and other stuff. The government is taking the best step to sue them in court than rather pass SOPA and PIPA. I think they are doing a good job on stopping major pirating websites, now I think they should change the legal definition of pirating so we don't lose youtube and other sites alike. Megaupload should of been shutdown period.

It's more of the fact that the government shut down megaupload before the bills were actually passed. Now try to picture what would happen if the bills were to be confirmed and passed. They would seek out every possible case of copyright, and the whole thing would get to a point where websites would be getting shut down becomes someone thought that they were breaking some kind of copyright law. And knowing this world; shit will get out of hand.

I'm actually getting scared now, in agree with Col. Avalanche and Degtyarev.

Even though, I'm a European this frightens me, this is seriously going wrong. Even though SOPA has been 'post-poned' they are still able to do this. (Cyber Police has gotten themselves an upgrade, es em tee hide!)
