Title: To Get An iPad, or To Not Get An iPad?
Post by: Red Alexmander on October 30, 2012, 10:13:33 PM
I got a ton of money for birthday recently, and currently do not own ANY Apple products at all.
I was think about getting the new iPad 4 that is releasing 11/2.
I was also considering getting it refurbished from gamestop, considering I have $150 gift card to there from selling my Vita and some games. (Also, refurbished iPads are less likely to have errors because of the process they go through for testing, and they get good warranties)

I was going to use the iPad for:
Games
DJing
Schoolwork
Games
Entertainment
Game

I absolutely hate the small touch screens on all the modern phones and desperatly need a larger screen with good processing power, and  this new iPad 4 has a new high-end processer.

However, my girlfriend and other friends are telling me that I will never use, but that just makes me think they have no reason for it. As you can see above, I have multiple reasons to have it.

Also, what memory size should I get? 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB? I've heard since the processor and graphics are better, games and programs with require more memory.

What is your opinion on the situation?

This is a god awful reason to buy an iPad, I know you have other reasons but "tons of money" and "i dont own apple products" shouldn't even factor in your choice

Fair enough, I guess, but ALL of these things can be done on a laptop or even an Android tablet, better.

Again, fair enough in a way, yet an iPad isn't your only option, just because it's the most popular doesn't make it the best, and the reasons are very generic as it is...

Also, what memory size should I get? 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB? I've heard since the processor and graphics are better, games and programs with require more memory.

What? No, this doesn't make sense. 16, 32 and 64GB are the choices of storage memory, not RAM memory, either 3 of these will power games and applications at the same level, however with increasing amounts of storage the more things you'll be able to jam more stuff onto it, and if you're thinking of putting movies and lots of songs on AS WELL as the more "top end" games then 16 won't be enough, 32 and 64 is just a trade off between price and "how much stuff can I pack onto it"

My opinion, from an Apple hater and Android lover, so yes I'm bias, but that's my side of things.

I just recently switched from having iPhones to an Android phone, the HTC One. I have to say, I'm very impressed with the Android phone, more so than I was with any of my previous apple products. I'm going to go with Smt in recommending that you try getting another form of tablet, as the iPad seems more overrated to me than anything else. Also, you're going to want to get more space if you have the money and are planning on putting movies, books, or pictures, or a ton of music of something on it. If you're just going to be getting a few games, maybe keeping a few pictures, etc, go with smaller memory space. But I always go with more space so I have that option when I need it.

I guess the only problem is that Android doesn't have as many gaming apps and the like as Apple products do, but I might be wrong in saying that. I haven't really taken a look at the Android market for apps and stuff yet, as I just got my new phone recently. So don't haterade on me if I'm incorrect in that statement.

There's my two cents.

I have an ipad, it's not that good. If anything, get the Asus tablet, because it's a laptop and a tablet. Or the Samsung, or the Android, really anything is better then an oversized iPhone.

Alternatively, get either a Samsung Galaxy III, iPhone 5, Moterola Razr, or a smaller iPad that fits in your pocket, and can call people. Talbets are a waste.

Galaxy Note is like a cross between a phone and a small tablet, it may interest you if you want something portable and powerful which is still large enough to be used easily:

Alright smt, i see what you are saying, but I have yet to find an android tablet that has enough processing power for the things i need, especially compared to the new A6x iPad 4 processor.
In my experience between Android phones and the iPod Touch (4th Gen), the iPod has been much smoother with pretty much everything from high end games to simple programs (home screen, camera, etc.)

I have used quite a few android phones and tablets, but they have all seemed slow, unresponsive, and have much less polish.
I also really would like a large 10+ inch screen, such as the iPad.
Also, I plan to get this with Wifi only, and I'm not sure that the android tablets come with that option.
Also, I really DON'T want a laptop because most of the things I need from it requires a touch screen, and I plan to get the ZAGG Folio with bluetooth keyboard for it also.

And by memory I did mean STORAGE space, and when I said that programs would use more memory, i meant TAKE UP more memory. Sorry for any confusion.
And the reason I stated that I did not own any Apple products is because I wanted you to know that I currently cannot experience what the App Store has to offer, and I've heard they have much more high quality programs than the android market.

Honestly, one of these would be better than an Ipad any day of the week.

iPad 4:

"A6X chip runs at 1.4GHz Dual-core, 1GB of RAM"

ASUS Transformer Prime TF201

"NVIDIA® Tegra3™ Quad-Core 1.3GHz, 1GB of RAM"

I'm sorry but a quad core Tegra 3 will hands down beat and shit all over A6x for any sort of gaming or multimedia usage, that .1 of a GHz is nothing and if you wanted with a custom ROM (something Apple won't allow, I forgot to mention how locked down Apple devices are) you could overclock the CPU on an Android tablet too

My reply to this is short:

Avoid, iPad, iPhones, anything Apple is a bag of shit and you should stay away from them. Heck even a Windows Tablet would be a better choice than an iPad.

What is your opinion on the iPad's Retina Display (2048 x 1536) compared to the ASUS Transformer's 1920 x 1200 resolution? This is also a big deciding factor for me.

Also, what are the warranty options for the Transformer? I know gamestop's refurbished iPads have a year or two long warranty and a long period where u can return it for full price.
And what's yall's take on the newly announced Nexus 10 tablet?

I own an iPad and I love it, I find it's all about preference when it come's down to it, Look around a test other options out. For everyday use the iPad I find does it all, Now DJing can be a bit of a pain with it, but you can just get used to djing on that.

So really, if you want it buy it. You don't have to read all those reviews that talk smack about it because they are usually written from people who hate apple product's and have never owned one.

everyone who says apple products are shit are just people who don't like them for whatever reason they have, they're not actually shit products

anyway, I for one do like apple, I have an iphone and stuff but I can honestly say I find ipads not worth the money. I just don't see them being worth it, when I first got mine I thought it was cool and enjoyed it but you eventually just get bored of it

IPads are really just big Itouches, my friend has one and from my perspective it's just not worth the money. IPhones are p good, they are simple to use/user friendly. I just couldn't see myself using a mac, I've went to the apple store a few times and it just seems a little confusing.

I could say the same about an Android tablet just being a big Android phone, which is pretty much EXACTLY what a tablet is, just a mobile touch device.

And just a side note, Macs are good for everything, except gaming.

that's a pretty bad argument considering my 4 inch £99 phone can do everything listed in the OP with no screen lag

I'm not saying a 4 inch phone is perfect for you if you want a big screen, I'm saying "does what you want it to" and "no screen lag" aren't arguments when my cheap phone meets both of that criteria, and any old tablet which is half decent will do the same, ipads aren't the only option
