"Woohoo being administrator would be awesome! I get a lot of cool features, people respect me and I can help people with my abilities!"
This is what is going on in all of your minds, am I close? I probably am. But I'm about to change your minds on the roles of administrators the way you think we are, and the way we actually are.

I'm writing this because I'm bored. I'm writing this because I want to give you guys a chance to peek into our minds and see the world trough our eyes. Only then you'll realize that being administrator is a WHOLE lot different then you think.

Features of being administrator.

Being administrator gives you a lot of cool features.
  • You get access to classified information.
  • You get to work in a team of other administrators
  • Players look up to you.
  • You get to use tools to assist players in the community that other people cannot use, such as the godstick, and any other admin command
I probably forgot a lot of things, but that is beside the point.
When you are not an admin, or you just managed to become one, the first things that come up to your mind would be:
"Awesome! I finally got admin! Now I get to use all these awesome features!"
But in reality, it's not awesome at all. I mean, sure it's cool that you can see information that makes your job easier, but what is so cool about that? Why would you be cool if you can see someone's IP address, or anything else that you can come up with.
It's not useful other then doing your job. You are highly restricted to use any of these information for other purposes, because that would get your demoted again.
So in short say: Is it really cool to have limited features? Or is it just considered your piece of tool as you are doing a simple job?

When I become admin, I would do <X>!

Now this is one of the biggest important subjects of being an administrator.
Lots of people think it's easy to be an administrator. A good example of this is from myself.
A long time ago, I was playing on a WoW private server which was quite popular. I was friends with a few of the Game Masters (Admins) back then, and they all complained about annoying work with Tickets.
Tickets were like report messages of people with problems that GMs could handle. I thought: When I ever become GM, I would do every single ticket very fast, and prove myself to be a good GM!

Here, it's exactly the same story with ban requests, appeals, and in-game reports. People think it's such an easy job and promise that they would do them all! But trust me on this, that you won't keep up with this promise after like a week of being admin. You'll realize that it's boring work, takes up a lot of your time, and you don't gain anything with it at all.
But oh no! Don't make those players unhappy! Don't let them think you are a lazy bad admin that doesn't do his job! Keep on working! Do those damn ban requests, appeals, and respond to every single admin request in-game.

Thinking about it, you'll soon realize that you are not someone players look up to. You are seen as a slave, that is doomed to do what people request you, else you are classed as a lazy bad admin that doesn't do his job.
You would be so busy with your job that you have barely any free time left to roleplay yourself. To actually enjoy the servers as a fellow player. (Because you still are a player, just one that has the privilege to assist players that need help.)
And if you finally deal with every situation, you can finally go enjoy your free time... For about 20 seconds.
Nicknero1405 (admin chat): admin to me please!
Oh god, there you have one again.
How many times do you have to explain that people are required to use a proper format to request your help? How the hell are you going to help someone if you don't even know what he needs help with, or where he is.
Specially on OCRP, 80% of the time someone cries out for your help, it's just a player that is stuck in the map. Most of the time, he appears to be right behind you, about 50 feet away. And then he expects you to teleport to him and unstuck him within 5 seconds?
Nicknero1405 (admin chat): admin plx to me! I'm stuck for like 20 minutes now! god damned!1!11
Yep, seconds are minutes now. But at least you know what he wants. But where shall he be? Are you willing to drop everything you were doing, may it either be RP, or running a store, or in the middle of a raid, just so you can teleport to him, unstuck him, and run all the way back to where you were?
Would it be much easier to use observer mode, noclip to him, unstuck him, and automatically teleport back to your old location?
Nicknero1405 (admin chat): Admin, I'm stuck inside a wall near the paint shop.
YESS!!!! Finally someone that knows how to make requests! Now quickly go in observer, free him, and go back. There! Done, within 5 seconds! Everyone happy.
*sigh*... Just wish it was always like this, but you rather get used to it, as expect the first example to be the most used one...

Administrator rules

Yep. The most feared few lines of any administrator.
Did you ever had trouble following the huge list of rules set for OCRP1.5? Then just stop reading here, leave this thread and forget about becoming admin.
Admin rules are there. Ready to be shoved up your ass by any player that likes to loophole.
Break any of these rules, and you can pack your bags for a single ticket off the administrator team for the rest of this community's life.
Honestly, it's not hard to follow these rules. But there are certain people that make it hard. People that go around attempting to screw with you, provoking you to react on such a way that you eventually by accident break the legendary rule 1: "Be nice to everyone. No matter who they are, or what they are doing. No exceptions."
What does this mean? Simple: Act like a sack of dirt that takes any troll, flame and curse upon you, without doing anything back.
Certain people make you mad, and you want to yell at them? Forget it. Dare to say "Shut the fuck up" and you shall be packing bags.
Who cares if the player you said it to is the biggest douchebag ever, and how hard he is being an ass to you. Break rule 1, and you are gone.
You don't have to be admin to try this out. Go ahead, try for yourself. Try to be nice to EVERY SINGLE person you meet for the next 7 days. Would you be able to make it to the end without using any curse word? Yes? Damn liar you are. It's inhuman to not use any curse word for a whole week. You can't help it that you are in a bad mood at times.

So tell me, you still think Administrating is an easy job?

Demands and responsibility.

As admin, you are required to be active.
This wouldn't be a problem for some of you players out there, but that is easier said then done. You are currently enjoying our servers and forum. You have nothing to worry about. You have nothing you have to stay focused to.
As admin, you will no longer enjoy our servers the way you are right now. You are in the servers, doing your job most of the time. You have to worry about every single player in the server. Watch over them, stay in focus and respond to any rule break you see.
All this work, will make you tired. Very tired. Administration requires lots of physically attention and it will change your mood soon enough.
It's not fun to be admin. It's hard work, and you don't get anything in return. You don't get paid, you don't get exclusive stuff. That would be elitism and unfair. After all, you are just a player. A player with privilege. (As I said before.)

You should be happy as a regular player. You get to enjoy all our work. You have nothing to worry about. You have no requirements you need to meet part from following a list of rules that isn't hard as most of them are common sense anyways.
We work very hard, just to make YOU happy. We have less joy in our job, and we have a shitload of requirements we need to meet or else we would lose our job.

So you may think: "What exactly would make me so tired, and bored?"
Well that is easy. As administrator, you are required to know the entire rules list as good as possible. You have to be responsible for admin situations where you have to make a decision. You have to come to a solution when two players are arguing with each other.
The easiest way is to listen to both sides of their story, and find out the truth. This is usually somewhere between both stories, because everyone would change the story so it sounds in their own good.

Lets make a funny example, shall we?
We have two guys, and you as third party. The two guys are neighbours which don't really like each other.
Guy1 finds a bag of trash in his garden. Guy1 thinks Guy2 dropped it there, so he picks it up, and drops it in the garden of Guy2.
Guy2 finds a bag of trash in his garden. Guy2 thinks Guy1 dropped it there, so he picks it up, and drops it in the garden of Guy1.
Wait, don't this end up as an infinite loop? Sure it does. But how would you solve it?
You find the bag of trash. You don't care in what garden it is. You pick it up, and put it in the trash can. There! Problem solved! Guy1 and Guy2 both happy, and you just solved a situation in a responsible and nice way.

So, knowing all this. Be honest now, did you want to be admin here? Did you thought it was cool to be one? After reading this, will you think about it ones more and actually think it's not that cool to be admin at all?
Feel free to reply with your thoughts, ideas and comments about this post.

Cheers, Nicknero1405

I agree with this, in every way.

Everybody wants admin, because it makes you 'cool'. Its bloody demanding, and makes you tired.

Think and read this thread before you guys want admin.

Nailed it on the muthfuckin head. Admining is not all that fun. The only reason I do it is because I like helping and I'm not that bad at it.
But like you said, it begins to piss you off a lot especially when people are so ignorant and stupid towards you. I'm not saying it's REALLY hard to do, but it becomes damn annoyng when you have to repeat yourself over and over and fucking over again. Example: "/warning (Not actualy cmd ¬_¬): If this fail driving/parking continues OTB will be brought into effect. First and only warning". Now that seems like a simple, clear warning right? Obviously wrong because it seems people can't understand the simple concept of driving like a fucking human. Then 10 seconds after I put the warning out I have to actually put OTB into effect because someone can't quite grasp the concept of good driving. That is one of THE most annoying things to happen when administating.

Another thing that angers the shit out of me is people running when you physgun them, or suicide to avoid an admin situation. How stupid do you have to be? It will only end up with you being banned because of your COMPLETE ignorance and lack of even the smallest amount of respect.

Anyway, those are some of the things that make me as an admin want to destroy rule 1 and shove it down some little tossers throat.

Long story short: Admin is fun for about the first week... THEN you realise that you're baby sitting a bunch of 4 year olds. Have fun while the novelty lasts new admins ^_^

Sorry if this seems more like a rant than a constructive comment :/

This obviously.
Yesterday I had such a guy at HL2RP. He was running and jumping around avoiding any form of RP with the combines. I teleported him to a roof in attempt to teach him some proper roleplay. He completely ignored me, tried to jump off the roof all the time.
All I tried to do was teaching him, and warning him for his actions. But because of this ignorance and non-compliance, he got a day ban for it.

Even tho i agree with this, keep in mind, you can leave the administration team whenever the fuck you want. You are not forced ;)

But yeah, i fully agree with this. Its fun the first month you have it, then its just normal in a way. Its not anything you would quit because you wouldn't get the chance again (or its not very often you get the chance again), and its just getting like any normal day on the PC.
Please do not add me on Steam because you have in-game problems. Make a thread in the correct board on the forum and i will respond to that whenever i have time.

Nick, you deserve a big glass of beer, this is so true.

Example, yesterday's situation on HL2RP:
41 players on, most of them are new players, and some are just troll and minges. Few admins on, and we're running out of breath just to maintain the server. And in every second we have:

(Report) Player a: admin help me plz
(Report) Player b: Admin help me, I got a minge here.
(Report) Player c: This guy is not FearRPing, can someone take care of him?
(Report) Player d: This one is new, someone help?
(Report) Player e: I lost x,y,z could I get a refund?
(Report) Player f: I'm stuck, help!

And then, in the end, players tell us that we do not care about their reports, and that we ignore /admin, and that we're lazy. It's not true, but we are busy, and there's a queue of reports. But most of people think that their report should be looked into at the first place. It's not possible to be in 3 places at the same time :(
But I do enjoy helping players as administrator, and even though this job is really hard at times, I love it.

I'm not quitting because I love my job, even though it's a pain in my ass at times.
I didn't wrote this because I'm having a hard time. I wrote this to allow regular players to have a look in our eyes and stand in our shoes before making a decision.

I just want people to realize that it's not easy as admin, and that we are not tools or slaves, so should not be handled like it.

Reason why I could never be admin. 1. Id break rule 1 500 times per day. 2. Id perma ban anyone who rdm me. 3. I get pissed off to much so it aint for me. Besides, as admin you have to actually watch the server, you cant play all the time.

Nicknero, this thread is right on the dot.  Before I say anything,  I don't want people to troll off what Ill be saying and what not, be civil.

As a former administrator here at Catalyst Gaming,  yes, being admin is a pain in the ass a lot,  I, myself,  have fun helping people out.  I enjoy teaching new players how to play and to help in every way I possibly can.  It does get annoying when you get those players that do nothing but try to anger a admin or what not to get them to do something against the all feared admin rule one.  I have seen, many, many players try to use admin rule one against a lot of administers.  Not going to give names of course.  When I was admin, it was tiring getting "Admin, help im stuck" all the time, every 5 seconds.  I did enjoy helping people get unstuck, help in a situation, or what it may be.  You will also get those players that keep bugging you in admin chat while your already busy with a admin situation.  For instance,  someone called for a admin,  I came, it was something to do with RDM, the second most complaint you get in admin chat.  While I was getting both sides someone started going help, CDM,  I was to busy however with the current situation and no other admins were available.  Then he started using caps in admin chat saying " I've been trying to get a admin for the last 20 minutes" even though its been maybe 3 minutes approx?  When I finally solved the situation I reported to him and other than asking for my help he starts to tell me I'm a bad administrator?    If you need help, be patient, only ask for help one, or maybe 2 times, im sure a admin has seen it and will get to you as soon as possible.  Yes, being admin means you have little to no ability to actually role play, make events, or what not.  Even with this,  I actually did have fun being a admin of this community, I was glad that I was able to help players and they looked up to me, well I think they did.  Just recently, as most of you already know,  I was demoted from the admin slaying rule one, ending in me packing my bags.  I am still here however, trying to prove myself once again.  I still help players to my best of abilities, give players knowledge of OCRP so they can play it correctly.  Will  I ever receive admin privileges back?  That is not for me to decide nor do I know the answer.  Yes,  it is quite fun doing passive events and being able to be active and play with my organization now without the constant admin requests.  However,  when I lost admin, I was saddened by this.  I enjoyed helping players more than I do making passive rp events and what not.  I was on OCRP around 9 hours a day doing my best to maintain the server, in which, most of the time was helping players.  Even when I was off the server,  I looked to see if a admin was on the server when I left, in most cases I would go back until I was too tired to even play anymore and got off.  If I was playing a different game and someone told me a admin was needed on OCRP, I would close my game right on the spot and be on my way to OCRP to help the situation.  So yes, it is a very hard job to do, and yes we don't get any items or anything from being admin, but however, we get to see people be happy to be playing on the server because of us, which is a benefit in its own right in my opinion.  That is my opinion on the subject, I probably would of wrote more, but I'm tired and getitng slightly sick, so I apologize if my grammar is wrong or some of it makes no sense.  Thanks

If I was offered an admin position again for hl2rp, I would take it. I enjoyed helping others with their needs and adding a little spice to their RP. However, that's about as far as I would go with maybe a bit of forum stuff to keep the outlands going. Otherwise, it's not that great. Its stressful when you have to deal with a hundred things as well as its difficult to please every single person.

Try being an Moderator on TheTechGame, It was a demanding job but I still got through with it. This is nothing compared to there bustling and booming community. Administration Privileges here is nothing compared to what I had to deal with.. I am glad I am retired from there at this point.

This is not a troll post nor is it a direct attack at anyone. IF someone else would have posted this I would have the same reaction.
This is a serious opinion on what has been written.

Nicknero, you're making it look like you don't like being admin and the only reason you are staying it is to feed your ego.
First thing on my mind after I read this was: "please quit the admin team right now, you obviously don't like being one"

"a chance to peek into our minds and see the world trough our eyes"

Are you different then from other people for having a job offered to you that you have gotten by playing a game and kissing ass and apparently don't seem to like doing?

Comparing GM's with admins in a simple community? That's like comparing the US army with the Dutch army...

Actually, for me, the interest level declined but then leveled off after about five months. I'm now apathetic toward it, but you only touched upon something. Becoming an admin also, according to Roflwaffle, ties you down to the community(expect that). No more playing on any other community on servers in the same interest group as CG's, at least in my case, that's what happened.

Be very careful when wanting to become an administrator. Do you want the power, and want to stay with CG in sickness and in health? Do you want to "get married" to CG? Go for it. But, if you don't want that level of commitment, hold off on it.

First thing on my mind after I read this was: "please quit the admin team right now, you obviously don't like being one"
I understand your point and how you think like this, but don't get me wrong. I don't hate my job. I like being an administrator, and I'm proud to call myself one. I was just bored and thought about writing a long story on how it actually is to administrate. Lots of people underestimate it, and end up leaving again, or doing something wrong that gets them demoted by force.

I absolutely in no way shape or form am trying to "feed my ego". I'm not even sure where you got that idea from.

"a chance to peek into our minds and see the world trough our eyes"

Are you different then from other people for having a job offered to you that you have gotten by playing a game and kissing ass and apparently don't seem to like doing?
Do you think that with this OP, I'm trying to say that admins are cool, and whatever else you mean?
If so, then read again, as I clearly stated that being admin doesn't make you cool. You are still a player, exactly the same player as any other player. You just get a few privileges that allows you to help players, and solve situations that require punishment or whatnot.

Comparing GM's with admins in a simple community? That's like comparing the US army with the Dutch army...
I'm not comparing anything. I'm stating an example where people think it's easy, simple and fun job to do, while once they are at it, they realize it's actually harder then you think, and becomes boring eventually.

To fix this boring idea, I can variate my job by going to either OCRP, or HL2RP. Or I could take a short break and play another game that has nothing to do with CG.
Eventually you'll get to ideas how to make your job easier and fun. But again, don't underestimate it.
