Here's what he's wondering in other people's terms:

"Hi, I've been playing on HL2RP (CG#2 server) and it's pretty fun, but I saw OCRP (CG#1 server) and was wondering what it's like (fun, active, etc). If anyone could help me out that would be great, thanks!"

No reason to update, would just break forum plugins, the forum works fine. I would only update for a 3.0 release.

I can enable with the click of a mouse, but no. It's a useless feature, you people should be self motivated (and coming from an internet hipster like me, saying karma is worthless is saying something).

No, you see, the reason this won't happen is because you people are not thinking in the long term. HRP used to be full all the time, it hasn't changed since then, it's just that people get bored of it. GModRP is the same thing, people will join thinking "Hey new CG server! This is awesome!" Then after the realize that it's useless to continue playing as there is no end goal or any motivation, they will stop playing. This is a serious problem with all 'RP' servers because, as a server host, we rely on the fact that people don't think about how everything they're doing is pointless and will all be gone some day. Take this as another example:
We decide that there will be a brand new server, but, the cost of this is that we have to shut down OCRP. This is an inevitable fact so there is no disputing it. Do you think people would still play and try to earn money on that server, with the knowledge that it will all be gone soon? No, they wouldn't. They would just stop playing there and wait until the new server goes up.

This applies to GModRP because it won't be fully supported. Our developers (which seems now to consist of only RTLK and Myself (me not knowing lua)) won't pump out any updates for it and the gameplay will soon become bland and repetitive.

You're going to say "No! You're wrong! I'll play on it every day!". Well, through experience, I've found that most people that say that, rarely do participate. For some, remember the thread for a suggested IRC server? Every post in that thread said "Yea we'll use it all the time!", and yet, it's just me idling in there all day. Why should we go through the effort of adding this gamemode and a new server, if it's just going to end up like that?

Yet another example:
When Adam rage quit and pulled out his Minecraft server, everyone said "We want a new one, but just leave it vanilla!". Well, look what I did, it's right there, still there, and yet, after a week, everyone stopped joining it. No one plays there anymore because it's games like these that after you reach your end game, you're done, you're ready for something new.

So no, there won't be any new RP gamemodes that we won't support. Our popular ones are OCRP and HL2RP, play there.

WOTS gamemodes always sound good on paper, but in practice, it doesn't work.

I have to honestly say that I like L4D 1 a lot better than the second. I admit, the second one is more polished off and leaves plenty of room for Valve to expand on it, but the first one just seemed to play better. There also wasn't as much confusion, just seven weapons. Though cutting up zombies with a chainsaw is just as satisfying.

General Discussion / Re: Server Status in Posts

While it may not commonly be used, it's main intention is for when Administrators/Developers make front page posts concerning server status. They love to put it in the post, even though it's at the top of the page, this will make the info live, and avoid confusion.

He didn't do anything wrong, his comment was him testing this new function and he put in an invalid server. The function returns "Unknown" if you don't enter the server right.

By the way, Renegade, your problem was that you left the < and > in. Those are just to show where to put the server name, you don't leave them in, I fixed your post for you.

While it's unlikely that there will be any official play-dates hosted by our staff, don't let that discourage you from setting up a play date with your fellow community members! It's not only allowed, but I would encourage it.

 A gaming community isn't just about playing on OUR servers (while we do encourage it :) ) but it's also about playing together!

General Discussion / Server Status in Posts
« on: August 16, 2011, 02:34:53 AM »
Allllrighty then,

Out of boredom and wanting a short break from working on the server administration page, I whipped up this:

The Status BBC code!

Using this is very simple;
To just get the basic status of a server dynamically embedded into your post, simple use
Code: [Select]
[status]>Server<[/status]
Where >Server< is located, the server name is required. You can see any of the server's names on the status bar on top. THESE ARE CASE SENSITIVE!

You can also get more information than just the status!
Use any of the following parameters in this fashion:
Code: [Select]
[status=>parameter<]>Server<[/status]Parameters are:
status - The status of the server (Online, Offline, Frozen and is colored)
ip - The current IP address in this format: 255.255.255.255:27015
players - The player count in this format: 0/10
player - The current player count as a number
max_player- The current max player count as a number
map - The current map
passworded - If the server is passworded (returns Yes/No)
connecturl - Prints a click able link that will cause steam to connect to the server.

Here are a few examples:

HRP:

Offline
Code: [Select]
[status]HRP[/status] OR [status=status]HRP[/status]192.99.244.56:27015
Code: [Select]
[status=ip]HRP[/status]0/45
Code: [Select]
[status=players]HRP[/status]0
Code: [Select]
[status=player]HRP[/status]45
Code: [Select]
[status=max_player]HRP[/status]rp_twinharbor
Code: [Select]
[status=map]HRP[/status]No
Code: [Select]
[status=passworded]HRP[/status]Connect!
Code: [Select]
[status=connecturl]HRP[/status]
Hope you guys find this useful!
