Title: Fallout 3
Post by: Sexy Frog on April 27, 2013, 08:46:34 PM
Okay, I need some serious help here. I obtained Fallout 3 about a week back and have been playing it. Every now and then I get to parts in the game where it totally freezes and I can't do anything. I can't even close it in task manager or alt f4. I literally have to sign out of my computer profile and sign back in order to close it. It happens particularly when I'm near toilets and sinks for some reason or when I try to drink out of them for health or whatever.

I'm running it on Windows 8 with an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor, 8GBs of RAM, a RADEON HD 6700 and ASUS M5A97 LE R.20 motherboard. I've tried a shit load of stuff. Installing patch 1.7, putting in the d3d9.dll in the fallout directory, following youtube videos, using FFV and FFA...nothing works. From my understanding Fallout 3 is just retarded when it comes to Windows 7 and 8 but there has to be a way to work it...

Hmm, just try buying it cheap off EBay? It could be a problem with the download itself.

My thoughts exactly.  I honestly do not trust pirated software.  There's a quip my dad learned from one of his friends, "If you pay with peanuts, you get monkeys."

What they said, it's much more effective to just buy a cheap copy and get the full experience with no mess ups.

But I remember hearing about this problem before and deals with some memory leak or whatever dealing with water reflections and textures. Try going to a pool of water/ lake and see how your system reacts to it.

It might be the fact that Fallout 3 doesn't support Windows 8...

Alas I don't have money to buy games and I don't like asking my parents too often to spend the money which is why I pirate games. So purchasing is not one of my options, however I think is has more to do with the fact that Fallout 3 isn't compatible with Windows 8/7 because every where I go I see people with the same problem and even people who have legitimate copies of Fallout 3 say the same.

I think Windows 7 works fine, so you could potentially try downgrading if you wish to play it. Windows 8 has issues with more games than just Fallout 3. I'm still using Vista myself :>

Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Find the line:

bUseThreadedAI=0

change it to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

Add another line after it and insert:

iNumHWThreads=2

This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

*If the game still crashes write this iNumHWThreads=1

You sound like my mom, I guess that's a good thing?

Did you install patch1.7 as well? That should also fix most (if not all) freeze issues.

I did. Didn't fix anything. But carbines thing fixed it so I'm good now.

Locking because resolved.
