Mapping / City Twenty Four
« on: April 01, 2012, 10:06:17 PM »

"In the game of chess, you can never let your opponent see your pieces!"

So, Catalyst:

What would you want to see in a Half-Life 2 Roleplay map? I won't spoil the map design thus far, as I've been playing around with it for quite a while now, with some more private input by Alex and others, but I may as well get the general consensus on what people would want to see from it.

Alongside the map, I'm working on quite a long back-story for the city, which I'll likely end up posting alongside this OP at a later date. For now, though, notes will suffice.

Some things to note as of now (undoubtedly more will be added):
  • City Twenty-Four is built upon the ruins of Geneva
  • The terrain has shifted on a cataclysmic scale
  • Roadways are wide enough to support an APC
  • The city itself is "built" in a vertical tier system
  • The lowest, ground tier will be "outlandish"
  • The second lowest will have an industrial/D6 atmosphere
  • The second highest will be more modern, loyalist
  • The highest tier will be the Nexus/various other Union stuff

When I think I have a decent amount of work done on any particular element, and when things look like they won't be changed around too majorly, I'll chug out some screenshots for your viewing pleasure. Otherwise, right now I need suggestions, comments, complaints, words of encouragement, something cheesy along those lines.

Just be constructive, if you can.

Social Discussion / Language
« on: March 22, 2012, 04:11:33 PM »
I know that this is an English community, (and that you're supposed to be communicating in English as per the rules #wow #whoa) but I also know that quite a few members are bilingual, some are even multilingual. So whether you're fluent, learning, or just want to give your input on how you're part of the "x language master race," give a reply!

For those that are fluent or learning, mind giving some background on why you got into the language? What challenges you have/had with learning it, maybe? How long you've been speaking or learning is a given, if you don't please!

Personally, I'm getting much more fluent in my German. I'm still learning, but I've been speaking it for about five years now. Coming from English alone, I remember it being a challenge to get a grasp on the tenses, particularly genative and dative. I'm much better overall now, though; much more fluent, as well.

Detektivbyrån - The Detective Agency

They did sort of electronica/folk music, but I've found it really catchy. I also like to share. They made a couple different albums before disbanding, my favorite being Hemvågen.

The one instrumental I've personally enjoyed the most is Nattoppet.

Their website: http://www.detektivbyran.net/
Their Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/detektivbyran

Some of it's a little odd, but the majority is sort of ~dreamy~.

Spoiler for Wikipedia Article:
Detektivbyrån ("The Detective Agency") was a Swedish electronica and folk music trio from Gothenburg. The group consisted of Anders "Flanders" Molin (accordion, music box), Martin "MacGyver" Molin (glockenspiel, traktofon, toy piano, Theremin) and Jon Nils Emanuel Ekström drums, sound box, small bells.

The three members grew up in the city of Karlstad, Sweden, located in Värmland County, but they did not form a band until they had moved to Gothenburg in 2005. The usage of more unusual instruments such as the accordion was inspired both by its prominent use in the soundtrack for Amélie as well as musical traditions in Värmland. As the band also played as street musicians there was originally also a requirement to have portable instruments such as the glockenspiel.

Between 2006 and 2008 the band toured extensively and also participated in several Swedish radio and TV shows including a program at MTV Europe.

On September 3, 2008, Detektivbyrån released their first full-length album, Wermland. The band was nominated for two Grammis awards, as newcomer of the year and folk music of the year in 2008. In addition they were also nominated for an award at Manifestgalan as the best live act of 2008.

In February 2009 Jon Nils Emanuel Ekström left the band, leaving the two remaining band members still working on the future album tentatively named "Beyond". Ekström has previously been playing drums, sound box, small bells on the bands albums and concerts. The band has also recently been contributing to the soundtrack of the American film Tenure.

In August 2010 the band was dissolved and clearly stated on their official website that they would not make any more music or live performances under the name Detektivbyrån.

Kurt Q. Asker's Civil Authority Application

OOC Name: voidicus

IC Character Name: Kurt Q. Asker

1) Please write a minimum of 3 paragraphs OOC'ly detailing why your character wishes to join the Combine Civil Authority and what lead your character to do so.
Kurt Asker's always been one for order. Maybe it was a natural thing, drilled into his mind after years of mindful watching of how his father did things; maybe it was something he ended up with later on in life, but never really thought was worth noting. There is a certain beauty to order, he often thought.

This ideal found practical application within his work life; Kurt was a successful underling of his father's development company for a time. His detest for office work was notable, and drove him to look for something more hands-on... He noted how information moved so smoothly from the top to the bottom, then back up and down in a sort of cycle.

By the time the Universal Union was established on Earth, Asker couldn't help but admire the orderly fashion it was operated in. The Civil Authority even more so: everything, and everyone, had a place.

Connections that his father had offered him safe refuge as a Loyalist, though the food was still pretty bad, at least to him. He survived as such for a while, but incentives always caught his eye, along with several good friends joining the Universal Union. It slowly became tempting. Then..

Well..

Maybe the lack of decent food had finally gotten to him, but he decided it was a sort of saving grace from the orderless lifestyle he had recently been living.

2) Please detail your characters traits. (Eg, Pure, Lawful, Trustworthy)
Decisive. Crafty. Affable.

3) Please provide 2 paragraphs about what you are expecting the Combine Civil Authority to be like for you and your character.
Personally, I expect the Civil Authority to be like old times for me. I've been playing the role of various Combine positions since the dawn of Half-Life 2 Roleplay. Of course, I haven't done anything recently, so I'll need to do some catching up. Otherwise, it should be a good time for myself, and I hope to have some fun with the others of the Union.

As for Asker, It'll be a learning experience for him, just like it will be for me. As a character, he's a quick learner; always has been, truthfully. There's a lot for him as a character to learn, and I know he'll be able to do a hell of a job. New experiences, best experiences.

4) Please provide a detailed back-story from an out-of-character perspective on your applying character. This section must be detailed and consist of a minimum of 300 words.
Kurt Asker was born shortly after one hell of a snowstorm; an early February bloomer, so to speak. With his birthplace being the once glorious steel powerhouse of Pittsburgh, he ended up being the son of a well-off structural engineer. Kurt was set for one hell of a good ride through life, though he wouldn’t ever accept it. Though his father was harsh on him, it only made him better; he was driven by the idea of gaining his father’s approval, and that drove him to go far in his life. His father was able to afford good education for him, though Kurt wasn’t particularly fond of the idea; he would much more have preferred to profit off of his own work, pay for his own education. His father obliged the offer, and hired him. Like father, like son; he started his work career working and keeping things neat in his father’s offices. Paperwork, office work, but anything is a start. Much better than nothing, he would agree.

Asker grew to detest office work, however; dull, boring, tedious, he called it. He bit his tongue, though; work it work. He was able to afford his own home off of his work, and was able to sustain himself fairly well. Life flowed smoothly for him, now. At the ripe age of twenty, he was already very well off in his own life; he had a good time with himself, despite not enjoying his current occupation. That disapproval of occupation drove him to want to get move hands-on, so to speak. He decided to go to college, using his own money, and learn to become a doctor. That’s hands-on, he thought. Something I can enjoy.

His education was cut short with the advent of the portal storms; with Pittsburgh being the city of three rivers, it was designated one of the many to-be walled off safe zones. He was tasked with helping out where he could, and pushed himself immensely hard to stay as far ahead as he could. Whether it was a medical emergency near the walls, or a simple construction job, he needed to stay active and involved. Should he have had his way, he might have considered joining the engineering military units stationed within the city. These thoughts were quickly rendered pointless, however, as the seven hour war came and went. The ever-mysterious ‘Combine’ had taken the Earth.

His own city was designated a number, and this is when Kurt was given his first tastes with life under the Union; he was quickly branded a Loyalist (much in part to the actions of his father) which sent him on a path of seeing what he considered a better life. Great friends were all slowly being moved and relocated to different cities; others joined the Civil Authority, and spoke quite highly of it. Just before he was able to apply in his own city, however, he was quickly moved out here. Thusly, here he was.

5) Have you ever had a CCA character here at Catalyst Gaming?  If so, explain why it was removed.
Nope.

North America

7. Whats your most memorable quality RP experience?
My most memorable, QUALITY Roleplay experiences have stemmed from being in the Union in some fashion. The absolute best would be the CED on Reich: Combine Evaluation Department, a handful of units that would psychologically and physically evaluate other units. In a sense it was internal affairs, but was incredibly close-knit, it truthfully felt like a brotherhood. On the inside, we had fun poking jokes about other units, but on the outside, we were cold and calculated; we were feared by quite a few, to an extent.

8. Do you consider yourself a good listener?
Yeah.
