Fixed Bugs / Car Breakdown Bug
« on: May 19, 2013, 02:34:13 PM »
While out of my car with the engine on, the car was destroyed; however, I could get in it and drive it still. When I tried to turn the engine off, I got a hint saying it was broken and to get it repaired. Looks like the engine needs to be forced off when a car breaks.

Suggestions / Suggestions for Dispatcher
« on: May 13, 2013, 03:01:44 PM »
While playing as a dispatcher, I've noticed the following shortcomings:
  • Player joining/leaving government job message should contain which job the player has joined/left; it is difficult to keep a list of who is what updated, when you have to scour the scoreboard for changes
  • Emergency phone call should have an indication that the call is emergency, and not a regular call

After some time of little going-ons in the Outlands, Andre decided that it was time to look elsewhere for people who may need help; his itch to make sure everyone he could help always got help not being scratched. He took just enough supplies to satisfy him and anyone he might meet for months. After many weeks of hiding by day, and moving by night, Andre found himself in some woods. He searched deep inside, when in the distance, he spotted a fire in the dark night. Andre squinted towards it to find other structures: tents, lean-tos, and towers. He slowly approached the camp, sure not to startle anyone who might be inside; he hadn't planned on violence, but one can not be sure anymore. There were cots, with men laying on them; they did not look well. A young woman slowly approached them, and tended to them. Elsewhere, armed men stood in circles and spoke, their laughter loud and booming. Just outside the small camp, a tow-
"Hey! Who are you?" Andre slowly turns, to find a large woman in a white, blood stained coat standing above him. She had a dark complexion, red hair, and a dirty face. "Well, can't you speak?" she interrogates. Andre stands tall, attempting to appear calm.
He speaks quietly, "I mean no har-"
"I didn't ask for that, I asked for your name, so tell it!" she commanded.
     "I am Andre, I-"
She wouldn't let him speak, "Well, Andre, what are you doing here?"
"I've been out for nearly a month, alone, looking for-"
"So, you must be hungry!" By then, a large group of people have gathered. The red haired woman spoke to a stout man in an apron, "Fetch some good food!"
     Andre insisted, "Well, I-"
"No, you'll eat!" There was no arguing. They brought him to a large, makeshift dining hall with many tables and chairs inside. Andre was sat down, and looked around the room. Many people were standing around him, staring at him as if they were inspecting him. Shortly, a large, stone late was placed in front of him. Andre's eyes widened, and his mouth almost dropped. The plate was topped with vegetables, meat, and rice. They seemed fresh. Andre looked up, suspicious, but was met by the red haired woman's gaze. "Come on, then! You're hungry!" Andre looked down to his plate, and slowly took his fork. It was not that he thought he may be some trick, as if the meal was poisoned, but he felt that what was happening was the opposite of his intent: he wanted to help others, not vice-versa. He ate modestly, but finished the plate, as to not disappoint his hosts and be wasteful. "Well, now that you are fed, we may talk!" The woman always spoke loudly. She led Andre into a tent, but this time no others followed her. The tent was bare, save for a woolen "sleeping bag" on the ground. The woman sat, still seeming large, even next to the still-standing French-Canadian with his heavy build. She gestured him to sit as well, and Andre complied.
"I am Maggie, Maggie MacLinn," her voice seemed proud, "and I run things 'round here." Andre seemed surprised at the name, though she looked Irish, her voice sounded more European. "So, Andre, where is it that you are from? You have got some sturdy clothing on, and is that a military insignia?"
"I came from a mountain range, just outside a city. It-"
    "Which city?"
"City 45, I left the city and found myself there." Andre proceeded to explain his story, at least the part starting from after he escaped the city. Maggie sat quietly, interested.
     "So, you are a soldier?"
     "Eh, yes, I suppose."
     "You like to help, then?"
     "Well, yes, I do."
"Good! We've got some injured, and we-"
It was Andre's turn to interrupt, "I do not know medicine."
"Well, see, I'm the only one 'round here who does. No one else is willing to learn, they're squeamish, or something."
"I can learn then, if you can teach." Over a few months, Andre picked up basic field medicine. He was no surgeon, but he could handle the many wounds and infections the people at the camp received. He stayed at the camp for a months longer, but decided it was finally time to return to those outside City 45. He thanked each member of the camp, who all supplied him with food and water to return. Andre had kept a log and a map of the way he came, so returning was much quicker, and only took 2 weeks. He immediately returned to the large bunker on the peak of one of the mountains, to find it demolished and seemingly abandoned. He ran to Belles, and found old faces in the inn there. Andre had returned to his friends with unforgettable experience.

IC Chat / Wilhelm Kuhl's Journal
« on: April 20, 2012, 03:46:36 PM »
*A red book found on the body of Wilhelm Kuhl*
I discovered that keeping a journal is not against the law today, and quickly purchased a blank book. This entry may be short, I have been worked hard today. Hoping to increase my status with the Combine, I asked if there were some jobs to be done. Apparently, there were, and I was the only one willing to do them. I scrubbed everything from the windows to the barricades at the Nexus. Can those even be cleaned? Pushed to exhaustion, they continued by making me clean the trash. I guess they had a hard day, too, and needed to laugh; they took a can from the bin, and dropped it, ordering me to put it back. At least I can make their day better. I think I'll take a shower and a nap before helping out again.
*The bottom of the page has a knife-shaped hole surrounded by blood*

Today was easier, because all I had to do was clean the windows. Of course, I helped out in other ways. Having an easy day, I just roamed the apartment complex, and looked for friends. I found something different entirely, just in the hall was a radio. I quickly reported it, who knows what people could use them for? I sure hope that I've got a good record by now. Those CWU workers look nice, and I'd like to join them. I'm sure the loyalists would love another doctor working in their hospital to make sure that they are alright. I'm trying to stay happy, like the Combine say to. The only trouble is forgetting my past, but they say that they're actively helping me with that. I can't complain about anything else. In return for my help, I get plenty of rations, so I am never hungry. I don't see why people starve anymore, if being fed is this easy. I don't think life was ever this easy. There were some lunatics about today... Just running around and trying to cause problems. It didn't take long for an officer to silence them, and that made me happy. Things here su-

I can't believe what happened today. First, there was a big sweep of the apartments. I didn't know what they were looking for, but I found out later. During the sweep, someone came up to me and actually asked me how to join the resistance! I egged him on, thinking I could trap him and report him. That's when another man came up and offered a quiet place to talk and help. Was this two birds with one stone? I was excited. The sweep was over, and we went into his apartment. My friend was with me, but didn't go in. He helped by reporting them while I kept them busy. Two units rushed in, and had us against the wall. One man... He tried to run, but didn't make it far. A unit put shotgun shells in his head before he was across the room. Seeing it would have hurt me, but I've seen enough bodies. Then, I found some sort of radio, it looked like. The CCA came and it had apparently completed a puzzle they were solving. They found something similar in another room, I guess, and were on to some conspiracy. The whole situation was exciting, and I got some good points i-

I was in a bad situation today, but it ended well. A saw a man putting up posters in the city, and quietly read one. He was selling contraband in the other district. What nerve he had! I did not hesitate to call the nearest officer. He approached me, and looked intimidating, but he also smelled nice, like cleaning supplies. I told him what had happened, but the man already escaped. To my surprise, the officer told me to go after him and convince him to come back! I accepted, but couldn't think of what to say. I made up a good story. I told him I had a friend bringing in a shipment, and couldn't get it myself. I paid him to "pick them up," and planned to have an officer detain him. It didn't go well, he became suspicious as they took their time to get there. One just started taking off after him, but he ran away. The officer wasn't angry, and instead sent me back! I had to justify what had happened. It was hard, but I convinced him that a shotgun came with the shipment, and that he could have it. A unit was waiting for him in an apartment room, where I told him to go. Unfortunately, it didn't go well for me. He went after the shipment, and was caught, but he locked me in his room! I requested for help, but they said they weren't sending anyway. I took to screaming, then heard a call. He said to back away from the door. Suddenly, bang, bang! The door fell down. A man, clad with armor and a vest, walked in with a shotgun. He didn't know who I was, and let me go. I was so relieved, and so was the officer. He made me his informant, and I was to go and get in-

*The journal from here appears more dirty and is hardly legible, even for a doctor*
I died today. Someone figured out who I was, and he killed me. I went to an officer and told him that I was found out, and he took me into the Nexus. He cut my hair, shaved my face, even gave me colored contacts. Unfortunately, he also scarred my face, to complete the look. I am no longer Wilhelm Kuhl, but Gunter Jaeger, my father. I must write less.
*The bottom of the page has a knife-shaped hole surrounded by blood*

A lot of people have died. A resistance was being brought down by my information. Some of the people I would've killed myself, and could hardly be called human. Others, though... They seemed nice, like they just wanted to help those who needed help. I must not feel bad, this is my job, and I am doing it well. There are only two people left in the organization: "Jack" and Lance Alvez. I am to become their right-hand man, and lead their armies to death. I hope that when this is done, that I can go back, and join the CWU like I wanted. Be normal.
*The bottom of the page has a knife-shaped hole surrounded by blood*

Happiness can not come without sorrow. I found signs, plastered all over the place, there's my description with several others; a "hit list" of loyalists who claim otherwise. I would be cautious, but I do not care anymore. I learned something better today: my brother is still alive. Someone was talking about how they met a German in the Outlands. I asked him to describe him, and I knew that it had to be him. We are so different in our views now, but it doesn't matter. I don't care if he is a rebel, he is my brother. With my uncle already lost, he is what I've got. I think that today I will not report back to the CCA; today, I will go meet my brother. We will live by ourselves, and be happy. I didn't want to report Jack and Lance anyway, they were good people. I will tell them that I must leave soon.
*The rest of the book is blank, and the hole and blood go through the entire book*

// Just an explanation: before Kuhl died, he was stabbed in the shoulder, through a pocket where he kept his journal. The rest of the thread will be OOC, if anyone wants to comment on it. I plan on doing a larger journal with daily posts about another character, but none on the characters I have now.

Life Before the Combine (1981-2004)
November 15th, 1981; a cold, dark night in somewhere in northern Canada. A child is born into a small family living in the wilderness. Andre is a large child, and from the start, he must learn to survive. His family lives in a small, self-sufficient village in which the men hunt and gather while the women tend to the house. Andre is only 10 when he makes his first kill. He approaches the moose carcass, with two arrows protruding from its neck, a precise and accurate kill. His father, proud, helps Andre take the kill home and skin it. The boy does nothing but smile as his family eats the meal he provided. 2 years later, Andre is a proficient hunter and earns a high name in the village. His father decides that it is time for him to learn how to use a new weapon to him, a rifle. Andre holds the gun high, his arm shaky while he aims. He closes his eyes, and squeezes. Birds scatter as the shot echoes through the wilderness, and a moose speeds off, away from a hole in the ground. Andre is saddened that he missed his first shot, but his spirits brought high again by his father, who explains to him that he cannot always hit and takes the boy home to learn how to clean the gun. When he is 13, an older man in the village takes Andre and teaches him how to fight. He feels that if all of the children can defend themselves well, that the village will be able to live its way longer. Andre was always large, and can hit hard. It is not long before he can fight off most other children his age. He continues to perfect his combat skills. In 1997, Andre is 16 and a young man. He fires a gun well, and his father has taught him many other important things. He can recycle old, broken things into new, useful items. He can discern poisonous plants from delicious ones. He is able to take a log, and make it into a tool. Andre becomes a skilled and important member of his community. He lives happily for a few years, but can not avoid the hardships in his future. It is 2003. Restless, Andre sits in the wilderness, not far from home. He watches life around him thrive in the trees. Unknown to him, powerful, angry, armed men rush the village in the night. Unprepared, villagers are quickly taken and slaughtered. Homes looted, livestock killed. Andre is alerted by horrid sounds; screaming, gun fire. He quickly stands from a tree stump he was sat on, and turns. With wide eyes, he watches his village be plundered. He figures all he knew to be dead, spins around, and sprints. He runs into the wilderness and escapes, starting a new life on his own. He puts all of his skills to the test and makes a small house for himself, living off of the land. He does not give up hope, and does what he can, although he may not live too long in the cold, unforgiving wilderness.

The Portal Storms (2004-2010)
Andre does not know what is happening. He has been seeing strange creatures, but managed to avoid being seen by them. He has been taken by soldiers to a city he did not know. Forced to live there, Andre becomes a recluse and avoids contact. Unfamiliar with the ways of civilized people, he does not fit in. He refuses to allow the soldiers to provide for him, and he lives on his own. Although he tried to, and so much wants to leave the city, he is not allowed. Andre lives in sadness for the next few years.

The Combine (2010-2011)
News comes to him that aliens have begun a large-scale invasion of Earth. He hears how humanity's combined army looses the fight in only 7 hours, and becomes ill. Again, he is forced to move to a large city. To live civilly, as the Combine see it. He can't take it, and sees an opportunity to escape. A unit patrols alone, mindlessly walking the street. Not very high ranked, nor a super-CP, Andre believes that he has found a fight that he could win. He slowly walks up behind the unsuspecting unit, and grabs him by the neck. The unit attempts to break free, but cannot fight Andre's grip. Andre releases the unit, spins him around, and hits him hard in the gut. The unit falls over as he calls for help. Andre hastily forces the unit's combat knife off of him and runs to safety.

Wanted (2011-2016)
Managing to hide in a canal, he hears several armed units rush the district before he runs away from the area. The units look up and down, when one climbs into the canal and calls for other units to follow. They flick on their lights, ready their weapons, and check every corner. Andre, hidden in the smallest cranny, becomes worried. Footsteps approach him, and a light suddenly flows into the area he is in. A unit nearly peeks his head in, when a deep voice is heard, ordering them to give up the search. Andre nearly sighs in relief, but holds it in to avoid being heard.

Current Life (2016-)
Andre now lives by himself just under the district in the canal. He becomes nearly self-sufficient, but lacks some common needs. Food and drink are hard to find, but he manages to live. Afraid to interact with those living above him, he sticks to himself. He feels that soon he must go up, however, so that he can get help and fully escape the city.

What will these authorizations give your character in regards to perks or defects?
Perks
Ability to be self-sufficient and live off of the land
Able to make useful items from old items, or from scratch
Able to defend himself using combat and weapon skills
The knife is a useful tool for carving and crafting, and defense

Defects
Having a weapon can be dangerous if caught with it
The knife can easily be lost
Andre, being Canadian, may not know the plants around C45, making foraging more difficult
Without much practice recently, some skills may have weakened
No knowledge of Combine technology, so salvaging those may prove difficult

What do you plan to do with these perks/defects?
Generally survive in D6, and eventually, the Outlands. I want to build a character in the safety of the city before escaping.

Will anyone else need these auths? (If so, list OOC and IC name(s))
N/A

Which server does this apply for?

Extra Notes (optional):
If there are any issues with the story (e.g., how the knife is obtained), then I'd have no problem changing it.

Childhood (1979-1988)
Wilhelm was born in Munich, Germany on August 8th, 1979. He had a happy childhood growing up with his brother, Jakob, and his close uncle, Nathan. Intelligent from a very young age, Wilhelm read and wrote well just before starting Kindergarten. His father always read the newspaper with him in the evenings. Being a businessman, Wilhelm's father, Gunter, traveled often. Wilhelm asked his mother if she could teach him to write so that he could send letter to his father abroad. Persistent, his mother agreed to spend time with him, and he learned to write in short time. At the first letter he received, Gunter was confused. Reading through the hardly legible letter about home and life left him puzzled, until he saw who signed it. Scrawled on the bottom was, "Love, Wilhelm." Gunter's heart was never so warm. Spending time with family wasn't Wilhelm's only childhood activity. He loved playing with his dog, a large, old black lab. While his dog, Alfred, often tired out before Wilhelm, there was no end to the fun. At least, not until tragedy struck the family. Wilhelm was left at home, now 5, with the 3-year-old Jakob, under the watch of Nathan while his mother was running errands and his father over seas, in America. A dark, quiet night an eerie phone rang in the house. The family was relaxing in the living room when word was given. Wilhelm was puzzled when Nathan entered, looking down. Without explanation other than their destination, the hospital, the two children were loaded into the car. The trip was long, and the young boys fell asleep shortly after departing. Awoken by the flashing lights of an ambulance in the parking lot, Wilhelm rubbed his eyes and was lead into the hospital. A wait the seemed forever ended with news that the family could not understand. Hilde, Wilhelm's mother, was dead. Returning home, leaving a gas station, a speeding car slammed into her door. There was nothing that could be done. Wilhelm lived in wonder for the next four years.

The Body, How Does it Work? (1988-1995)
His fascination with the body started when he was 9, while watching an educational film on anatomy. In a sense, he was obsessed, and constantly bombarded his family with questions that they couldn't answer; How does this work, and why is that there? What does this do? His father, exhausted of his little medical knowledge, sent young Wilhelm to the library to check out books on the body. This way, he thought, Wilhelm's curiosity could be satisfied. His thirst, however, was not quenched; In fact, the more Wilhelm knew, the more he wanted to know. All throughout school he would research and read more about anatomy. He went to hospitals and doctor offices where he became interested in disease and medicine, which he continued to learn on his own as well. With his knowledge, Wilhelm became the "local doctor." Whenever there was a minor injury or a cough, he was quickly on the case, and knew just what to do.

Higher Education (1995-2002)
His opportunity came as a young adult, when it came time to choose where his education was going and what career it would lead him to. At 16, he was finally able to choose a vocation, and studied medicine in school. In 1996, Wilhelm was 17 and decided to continue his education with an apprenticeship. A family friend, Paul Pferdmann, was a surgeon at the local hospital. Paul gladly took the interested youth under his wing, where Wilhelm learned hands-on about surgeries; The medicine, the tools, and most importantly, the body. When it came time, Wilhelm looked everywhere for a university to take him. This was not hard, with his fascination and current knowledge, many universities wanted him. The hard task was finding a university that he wanted. After a long search, he decided to stay close to home.

Adult Life (2002-2004)
Wilhelm graduated from the University of Munich in 2002 at the age of 23, donned with the title, "Dr." Taking to his new title, his friends became calling him  by it. Wilhelm was now "Doctor." He worked as a surgeon in a small hospital near his home. His next mission was love. He searched through the women he knew well, trying to find one who would take him, and who he'd take. He found her; Claudia Wunderhuhn was beautiful, intelligent, and completed him. They became engaged and lived together before their wedding. Sadly, their wedding never happened. It was cut short by an unexpected incident.

The Portal Storms (2004-2010)
Wilhelm was 25 when he moved to a military base away from Munich to survive from the monsters teleporting in around the world. He took his love, Claudia, with him. He continued his work, helping the injured in a makeshift hospital. Without much ability to save lives without the correct tools, a lot were lost. Wilhelm become accustom to death. Unfortunately, there were a few more in his future, that he could simply not handle. The lean-to city all felt pity for Wilhelm. He had the job no one wanted; the job that you could not succeed in often. On an uneventful day, Wilhelm was relaxing with Claudia. They decided that if they die soon, they would die married. Within the month will be their wedding. Claudia was filled with glee, running up and down the city to spread smiles. Blinded by love, she tripped over a tree jutting into the walkway, breaking her leg. It was an awful break, and she was brought to Wilhelm immediately. The wound became infected, and Wilhelm feared that he could do nothing. On September 28th, 2006, Claudia died. Wilhelm continued to work in tears.

The Combine Attack / Life Currently (2010-)
4 years later, the Combine attacked Earth. While others around him tried to fight, Wilhelm accepted his fate, and surrendered to the Combine. Wilhelm feared the Combine, and loved them at the same time. He remained loyal when he was sent to a small city, where he lived for 3 years. In 2013, Wilhelm was 34, and was shipped to City 45. He learned, happily, that his uncle already lived there and that his younger brother was on his way. The train stopped at a city in between, picking up Jakob and a few other citizens. Wilhelm greeted his brother with a smile, but Jakob was not so happy. He hated the Combine, and decided that he would never live under their rule. Jakob managed to escape the train and run out into the wilderness, just outside of City 45. Wilhelm stayed, and lives now thinking his brother is dead. Clinging to the hope of having one last member of his family that was close to him alive, he arrived to find out otherwise. Rushing to where his uncle was to be, he found a sad man. Not concerned with the man's problem, he quickly asked if he had seen Nathan. The man looked up, with tearful eyes. Nathan had lead a resistance group, and was captured. The Combined killed him mercilessly. Angered at his uncle, Wilhelm took that he did no good and took no immediate sadness to his uncle's death. Wilhelm currently lives in the city, remaining loyal to the Combine.
