IC Character Name: Mark Newmann
1) Please write a minimum of 3 paragraphs OOC'ly detailing why your character wishes to join the Combine Civil Authority and what lead your character to do so.Before Combines came, when Mark was young, his family owned a restaurant. It was often target of vandalism, sometimes vandals just sprayed the windows, sometimes they also broke them or restaurant furniture, or sprayed the walls. His parents were both working in the restaurant all day, so it was Mark who had to tidy that mess up. Although it was not hard work as he only had to clean the windows or to repaint the graffiti, he hated that job and he did it only because he knew he will help his parents with it. It just took him time, and what was the worst thing – after a few weeks, they always came and did it again. And Mark always had to tidy it. The Police never gathered any traces and always left in few hours with no evidence.
After Seven Hour War and relocations Mark thought people were going to act civilized. But they didn’t. Although they knew the force of the Combines, they still acted against their laws. They were also unfriendly to citizens respecting the Union – to loyalists. Mark wasn’t sure which side should he join. Resisting citizens are just against the rest, but loyalist have better relationships with the Benefactors. Mark chose to be loyal to the Union, not only because of fear of its forces, but also because of he feels he owes it something for saving the Earth, even when they could destroy it in a moment.
Mark’s loyalist position got him in an unfriendly state with most of the other citizens. His first loyalist point was for helping to keep the Union Civil Housing lobby clean. His last two loyalist points were for helping to tidy up the debris of the balcony, which fell over the plaza. Then he got a loyalist armband. Now is he proud that he chose to become a loyalist. Where would he be otherwise? Most likely in the Nexus detainment cell, if not amputated. He has a chance to become part of the Universal Union and he doesn’t want to waste it.

3) Please provide 2 paragraphs about what you are expecting the Combine Civil Authority to be like for you and your character.Mark’s first weeks are going to be very hard for him. He is going to need to learn a huge amount of things he never did, neither tried. He is not sure if he can become a Civil Protection unit, but he is going to do his best. He is going to accept and obey any command given to him and to do everything in his possibilities needed to complete that task. Although Mark knows it is going to be long journey, but he thinks he is prepared.
I never had any Combine Civil Authority unit. If my application gets accepted, I will try to be as active as possible. Roleplaying of some players as CCA units is amazing. I wish to learn roleplaying better. Roleplaying as Civil Protection recruit will allow me to enter another, higher level of roleplaying, something still unknown for me.
4) Please provide a detailed back-story from an out-of-character perspective on your applying character. This section must be detailed and consist of a minimum of 300 words.Mark Newmann was born in Brooklyn, New York, in January 1980. Both his parents - his father Gareth Newmann and his mother Emily Newmann – were working in their family restaurant. Mark’s father was cook and worked in the kitchen. Mark’s mother could cook very well too, but her husband was better, so she accepted the role of a waitress. Mark liked to stay in the kitchen with his father and to ask him questions about cooking. He had no problems at school. He had loving parents and loving family. His childhood was great. But nothing lasts forever.
Mark’s best remembrance is from his thirteenth birthday. His parents were saving money last months and they took him on holiday. They rented a cottage in woods where they spent five days. Every day, they played board games or snowball fights, built snowmen, read books while sitting in front of the fireplace . They all were very happy and they enjoyed these days as never. Then they returned to New York. This is the place where the remembrance ends.
They were welcomed by police cars staying in front of their restaurant’s entrance. Policemen refused to let them in, but one officer came out and said them what happened: last night, someone broke the window, got inside and tried to rob the register cash. It was almost empty so the robber decided to go upstairs, where the Newmann’s family lived, including Mark’s grandparents. In the result, the robber didn’t take almost anything, but Mark’s grandfather was in hospital because he tried to stop the robber. He had a concussion and a laceration on his neck. Mark’s grandmother was frightened, but she was okay. At the end of that day, the police finally left the restaurant. The broken window needed to be glazed, the cash register was unusable and some restaurant furniture was broken, too. The restaurant was closed for the next week because of needed repairs. Then the restaurant opened again. After another week, doctors let Mark’s grandfather to go home.
On 16th March 1995, Mark’s father got ill. The restaurant got closed and whole family took care after ill Gareth. After three days, he asked for a doctor. That doctor wasn’t able to diagnose the disease himself and took Gareth to the hospital. Mark visited him every day, but on 3rd April, Mark wasn’t allowed to visit his father. He was only allowed to look through window at his dad, lying on the bed unconscious, connected to several monitors, breathing oxygen. 20th March 1995 was the worst day in Mark’s life. His father died. Doctors were not able to tell him neither his mother what killed him.
Emily, Mark’s mother, fell in depression. She was unable to do anything for couple of days. Only way she saw then was to close the restaurant. But Mark convinced her that she can keep the restaurant open, because Mark would help her with any expenses. Emily taught Mark some other meal recipes and then she gave Mark a try. The result was great. They became a good team and kept the restaurant well doing.
In 2010, strange things started to occur. Reporters called them “portal stormsâ€. Big clouds of different colours were transporting aggressive animals to Earth and people began to move to major cities. These cities had army and police forces which were keeping these dangerous creatures out of them. Especially the New York City had problems to accommodate incoming people. Mark and his mother decided to offer their restaurant a place to live. Although it drastically changed the lifestyle, people all over the world were able to live this way, grouped in major cities.
Five years later, with one of the portal storms, different creatures were transported. Terror ruled the entire planet. Within seven hours, aliens calling themselves “The Combines†got control over the Earth. Their strength was amazing. Human soldiers were nothing against them. They were about to kill the remaining humans, but Dr. Wallace Breen negotiated with The Combines. In the result, the Earth was saved. People were transported to different cities, right after re-education of new laws. Mark was transported to City 18. Unfortunately, his mother was not. Shortly after his transportation to City 18, he was sent to City 23 and few months later to City 45.

My apartment‘s neighbour was a resistance member and they didn’t know that I am listening in the apartment nearby. When they were talking about their experiences, I used my request device, couple of Combines came in and I was interviewed by local server newspapers. It was interesting.
