An obvious pick, but Wagner was always a fascinating character.

He was famous for using a double bass, a bass so large, it required two people to play it.  He had so many basses, that the walls would shake without the use of amplification.

In short, Wagner was the first metal head.

I really enjoy Handel's Keyboard Suites & Fugues. His Fugues are especially rich in polyphonic texture.
