General Discussion / Re: Lua Tutoring
« on: January 11, 2014, 09:52:20 AM »
I think learning by yourself is the way to go. Lua isn't that hard to pick up at all, and it's a great starting language if you want to get into advanced programming(C/C++, C#, etc).

Read Programming in Lua here. It's made by the creators of Lua and though it is 2 editions old, it's still a great way to get started.

Take a look at Learn Lua in 15 Minutes here. You're not going to actually learn Lua in 15 minutes, however it's basically a tutorial written in code. The explanation is written in comments and explain what you're looking at.

When you get to coding for Garry's Mod, take a glance at the wiki here. If you find an undocumented page, take a look at the old wiki(Garry's Mod 12) here.

Lastly, just take a look at other people's work. See how other people write and try to figure out what their code does. You can even try to recreate their code, make it more efficient and whatnot.

As for text editors, I personally use Sublime Text 3 with the GMod Lua syntax highlighter. IF you do decide to use Sublime Text, install Package Control. It basically installs any plugin, theme, and syntax highlighter you want straight from Sublime Text. No need to Google anything, you just search for it in the text editor and it installs everything for you. If you don't want to buy Sublime Text, use Notepad++ with the GMod Lua syntax highlighter.

Also, note that you will not remember everything. For every project you work on, you will have to reference something or Google something. Every programmer does this and don't let it make you feel like you're a bad coder.

News and Announcements / Re: Minecraft Server Issues
« on: January 10, 2014, 08:54:22 PM »
The modpack we were using, Direwolf20, was using way too much of the server box's CPU so we had to shut it down.

To fix this issue, we're going to have to change modpacks. Please choose one of the options above. Note: If Ultimate is chosen and is causing issues with MCPC+ and the plugins, we'll add the mod pack with the second most votes.

Note that the worlds will not be saved because some things that Direwolf20 added to the world may not be in the the new mod pack, thus causing errors. I will try to save Creative.

Mcpc+ does that, I suggest not using it with certain plugins.
It must be used in order to install Bukkit plugins on a FTB server. We don't have many plugins, anyway, only ones needed for administrating the server or for Multiverse.

Mcpc+ is not the only thing, bukkit forge/forge bukkit work aswell and I use them on my servers.
Mcpc+ causes too many glitches.
MCPC+ is based on spigot, and that right there just tells you it has better performance. Not to mention that when I first set up CG's MC server I tried out BukkitForge and the performance was crappy, so I stayed with MCPC+. MCPC+ is also compatible with more plugins.

Take a look at this hook and example.
http://maurits.tv/data/garrysmod/wiki/wiki.garrysmod.com/index1bed.html

The hook is used when you press whatever button is bound to +reload, and in the hook you simply handle animations, clips, etc.

What's your script look like? Be sure to use the Reload() hook.

It's actually Lua with the Just-In-Time (jit) compiler and Garry's Mod libraries. It's still Lua, however just with some premade libraries. Think of Java with the Swing(Graphical Interface) library. It comes with things to make your life easier.

Take a gander at lua.org/pil, the first edition is free and online. Lua is a great language to start off with, too. It really demonstrates the basics of programming and how different statements are aspects are controlled. Also, please note that Lua is not a programming language. It is a scripting language, big difference.

I recommend taking a look at other people's work, also. It's a great way to learn. Visit Facepunch.com and look under the "Developer Discussion" and "Gamemode/Addon Releases" boards. That's where all of the Garry's Mod scripters join to talk.

Yet again... CG at it's finest... Failing to see potential for a good RP situation "slow clap".  Whatever.
Not trying to be mean, but don't expect everything you suggest to get support. OCRP is lite, and adding things for in depth RP situations won't work too well.

Punchwhoring wasn't that big of a problem to begin with. It definitely was never a cause of mass rdm, either. I think they're fine left in.

Don't see anything wrong with adding it, however allowing drugs to be grown/made in public? No. Keep it in buildings.

I tell ya what, if aether was ever updated and someone made a standalone server with just that mod... I'd think it be a pretty good hit. Although I post this knowing that we wont take the time to update the mod pack etc etc, just throwing in my two cents.

I don't believe the Aether is in any FTB mod pack, which means we'd have to add it ourselves, and then there's making sure it's compatible and maybe having to change configuration files. Not to mention everyone would have to add it manually to the mod pack.
