Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Re: Assaulting Units
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:17:01 PM »
In my opinion, people jumping lower ranked units is metagaming. Citizens aren't supposed to have one single bit of knowledge of the CCA and how it works or their ranks or anything. The way its supposed to be, is that a citizen doesn't know the difference between an OfC and an 04. They should ICly know nothing about a unit, other than not to disobey them or face death, a beating, detainment, or all of those.

I was jumped myself yesterday by three citizens while there were only 3 units on. Myself, 275, and a recruit. I was the only one patrolling, as I believe 275 was training the recruit. There weren't but a few citizens on, so SD were being met. I think what people are doing is using their OOC knowledge that an 03 or 04 isn't ICly as capable as an 02+ and then singling those units out and jumping them, knowing that if that unit RP's correctly, they won't be able to handle the citizens.

You never see an 02+ get jumped. There has to be a reason for it, and I'm calling metagaming. People are learning the ranks OOCly, or on their own unit, and getting on a citizen, and using that knowledge to single out and jump 04's. Like Swoots said, if it was actually being RP'd out correctly, it wouldn't as big of a problem. Today, an 04 was lured to a shop and jumped by 4 people. It gave us a cool RP situation, but the problem was that a few of the attackers were doing things like acting like superman while wounded and malnourished. One was shot in the arm, one was stabbed, another was bashed in the face with a shotgun by an 01, which was Swoots himself. One actually tried to escape, which is reasonable. The other two still went on to attack while wounded by stab wounds and blunt force trauma wounds to the face. That, along with being malnourished to begin with, are enough to bring down any citizen, but not these citizens. The one bashed in the face decides to wrestle the 01 and even "bring him down." The one who was stabbed decides to "Pull a hidden blade and charge another unit." Along with this, one of the citizens attacking the unit does a /me of "/me tries to kill cop." That one was a real quote, word for word.

When I was jumped, one citizen did a powergame /me of "/me puches the cp in the stomach, making him puke in his facemask." I had to LOOCly call the citizen down for powergaming, in which that /me was voided. Its getting pretty aggravating that citizens keep trying to jump these 03's and 04's. We don't let recruits patrol alone for this reason, but I think its only fair for 04's and 03's to act a little more like superman if they're going to get jumped on a near daily basis, rather than for the CCA to change their patrol policies. If 04's were required to patrol in groups of 2 or more, then let's say 5 citizens are on, 3 units are on, and one unit is an 04, one is an 01, and one is a recruit. The 01 is training the recruit, and the 04 is patrolling. ICly, the citizens wouldn't know how many units are available to respond from the Nexus, so checking the scoreboard to see that only 3 units are on is metagaming if they decide to jump the 04 because of lack of units on. I think people are doing things like this in attempts to get units weapons and equipment just to have guns.

Like I said, if you can properly RP as a citizen and not act like superman when ICly you're malnourished, then feel free to create a good, fun RP situation where you attack a unit. If you can't, then don't bother please.

Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Awesome Event Ruined Today (02/09/12)
« on: February 09, 2012, 03:46:09 PM »
This is partially a rant by me, but its a valid rant in my opinion. What happened with this was ridiculous in my eyes.

So I was on my NOVA unit on the City server today and we had a really nice murder/clue following event going on. I got to actually tag and bag evidence and get into forensics a bit and help follow clues and try to logically catch this killer because I was one of the few NOVA units on. It was really an enjoyable RP experience for me to a point. The problem was, people wanted to start attacking units that weren't involved in the event, which caused everyone to drop what they were doing with the event and go help with that stuff. One of the problems was another troll minge that caused such an uproar that we had to drop everything and then deal with that. On top of all this, I'm supposed to be ICly investigating UCH rooms and gathering evidence. During this time I'm asking questions over the radio and giving information, etc., and no one is responding. Not even to my OOC questions of "Is anyone even there?" After awhile, I started to get fed up with the constant distractions, other units completely forgetting about the event to go do other shit, citizens wanting to "Attack" other units that caused even more distractions, and just the lack of guidance and participation by anyone other than myself. So I pretty much just stopped participating in the event just like everyone else did for no real reason.

Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Re: My thoughts on Crime in Outlands
« on: February 09, 2012, 11:59:05 AM »
I think this might have something to do with the recent spike in players on the outlands map. I'm not on very often, as I'm usually on the city map and I've noticed somewhat of a drop in players there and an increase on outlands. You probably got a lot of the minges we had on the city server. Not to say we don't have any minges on there anymore, as we always will. I planned to get Ep.2 so I could see the entire map with no errors so I could enjoy my time on the outlands map, but if you say its just a huge mingefest, I may not waste my money. I get enough of dealing with minges as a CCA unit on the city. I don't need that as someone trying to play survival RP on outlands and constantly getting mingerobbed with shit RP. Knowing me, I'd lose my temper after awhile and get a gun and just "RDM" minges. I don't need to be banned for taking measures into my own hands so I think I'll stay away from the outlands if its that bad.

229
I understand. A few days ago, me, a GRID 04, was attacked by two citizens, patrolling alone. Even though I stabbed one in the arm... AND in the gut.. he continued to fight.. -_- There were also about 9 other units on, I was RIGHT outside the nexus, and no one would respond to my radio calls. Finally, a fucking DVL came out and beat the shit out of them. They took my gun before this and I got shot.

Exactly, its like they hear "Officer needs assistance!" on the radio and assume its OOC or put it off for a sec to finish training a recruit. Then there's no reason to ICly degrade you because you got overwhelmed and properly played to lose and RP'ed how you should. Its not your fault you got jumped and RP'ed logically correctly and no one came to help quickly enough when you called for help.

230
There are many problems with the current Play To Lose system in my problem. Either not enough people understand it and think they're superman in an RP fight, or people do understand it and play to lose and then they get ICly penalized later for it, and it actually makes you not want to play to lose like you're supposed to anymore.

I understand that it may be appropriate to ICly reprimand a unit if they get attacked and play to lose based on their experience and rank, but when that IC reprimand seems more like a serious OOC and IC thing, it makes you feel like you were wrong for doing it.

I'll give an example without giving any names or other information. A unit is alone patrolling the plaza. A citizen yells for the officer, showing he needs help or is in need of something. That unit approaches the citizen and asks him what he needs. Two other citizens come up from behind the unit and wait. The citizen asking for help signals to the other citizens to jump that unit.

Ok let's look at this situation. Let's say this unit is an 04, which is just one rank above a recruit. He's being surprised, and unexpectantly jumped by 3 citizens. Since he's an 04, he's not going to be super experienced in dealing with this sort of thing and he isn't expecting it, which means the citizens would logically have an advantage due to their number and the fact that they were able to surprise him. So let's continue with this scenario.

The unit is surprised by the attack and doesn't expect it. He is quickly grabbed but is able to get a swing off at one citizen in the face, which immobilizes him for a brief time. The other two are trying to hold his legs and punch him in the spine and stomach and face. Due to the unit's kevlar, the body punches would be somewhat ineffective as would the face punches due to his facemask, but he would still feel them and would still be immobilized somewhat by the citizens trying to pull on his legs and grab his arms and stunstick. The unit quickly speaks into his radio and calls for assistance when he realizes he's been attacked and needs assistance. Let's say the other unit available to respond is an 01, who should be trained to immediately respond to call for help from another unit, but for some reason it takes him a few minutes longer than usual to respond. So long in fact, that this unit being attacked has to actually stop the RP for a moment in LOOC to make sure the 01 isn't afk over the radio. The 01 never responds over the radio and eventually shows up to the scene, where the RP is then continued. The citizens are dealt with and the 04 is able to get back on his feet and help. The 04 is later talked down to and reprimanded by the 01 for being jumped by three citizens, being told he should be capable of handling it ICly.

Ok so let's look at this. The 01 ICly should know that an 04 isn't ICly capable of fighting off and killing 3 citizens at the same time after they jump him, and IF he were to do that, it wouldn't be playing to lose and the citizens would likely complain about how a unit couldn't logically defeat 3 citizens after they jumped him. But why does that 01 have to talk down the 04 ICly to the point that the 04 now thinks he needs to just start pulling his pistol and blowing people away no matter what the situation is, just avoid another "mess up" when he gets attacked by a citizen or group of citizens? Shouldn't the 01 use his IC knowledge and logic and common sense that the 04 couldn't possibly be able to handle 3 citizens jumping him and surprising him and instead of saying something like "You need to learn to handle yourself, I should have left you there to fend for yourself, I'll be making sure you get more combat training soon, etc." Yes, you can say "Well its just IC, don't take it seriously", but the problem here is, is I don't think the 01 should say something like that knowing the 04 can't ICly handle such a situation on his own when he correctly plays to lose. Because now, the 04 may think, "Well next time, I'll be sure to pull my pistol first, and a lot faster. This won't happen to me again."

My point is, is when a lower ranking, inexperienced unit finds themselves in such a situation, higher ranking units who speak to them about it need to take into account their IC capabilities, and the fact that they need to play to lose, not talk down to them like they made a big mistake by not being superman and killing everyone attacking them with their laser eyes.

Bug Reports / Re: Stunsticks
« on: January 21, 2012, 06:12:32 PM »
Yeah I pointed this out (as well as many other people) right after the effect was added in the latest update and back then it was said that, "Yeah, we're going to restart to fix that." The server was restarted and the problem was still there. Its not a huge deal, but its there. If its more trouble than its worth to fix, then its fine how it is until someone has time to work on it.

Half-Life 2 Roleplay / Rumors of a HL2RP Map Change?
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:34:02 PM »
I was on the server yesterday and people started talking about "the next map change." Someone mentioned the map updates were awesome or something like that which started a lot of speculation that the map was going to be changed. So I'm asking if the map is being changed or not? Is this all just a misunderstanding? Is it true or false? What's the deal?

I don't personally support a map change at all, but maybe some map addons or small changes to C45. No other map has the right accommodations for our factions. For example, what other city has a Nexus large enough to support the current CCA we have? None that I've ever seen have facilities for training of all the divisions, a med bay room, an HCMR, an interrogation room, plenty of detainment that's easily accessed, a firing range, or anything else that we have really. Any map change for the city server of hl2rp would actually cut way down on RP capability. This is an obvious fact, as lack of space would make recruit training obsolete for the most part.

Not to mention the size of C45. Why downgrade from a larger map that often fills up with 40 people, to a much smaller map such as C18 that some people seem to support a change to? The only thing I can see a map change doing is limiting and cutting down on RP. Of course if there is no map change, then there's no cause for alarm I suppose. If there is, I suggest those who are in charge of changing the map take what I've stated into account before you change it.

Someone should really set the record straight on this whole map change issue though, as its starting to cause a lot of questions to be asked and a lot of confusion. Best to nip it in the bud before too many false rumors spread.

Josh Arnold's Civil Authority Application

OOC Name: Airborne1st

IC Character Name: Josh Arnold

1) Please write a minimum of 3 paragraphs OOC'ly detailing why your character wishes to join the Combine Civil Authority and what lead your character to do so.
From a young age, Josh had a desire be a part of a disciplined organization such as the military. During his education in the United States, he spent four years in N.J.R.O.T.C.; a military organization in many U.S. high schools. He planned to go in the military years before the Seven Hour War and intended to spend the rest of his life in the military. When Josh was 18, he went to sign up with a military branch called the Army National Guard with intent to fly helicopters some day as a career. Because of his motion sickness, he was denied the ability to join any branch of the military.

Being in N.J.R.O.T.C. fed Josh's desire for discipline and prestige and he was distraught when he wasn't able to join the military. Years later after surviving the Seven Hour War and learning that all police and military personnel were killed, he was glad he had been turned away, but at the same time, he was patriotic and respected his country's military highly. Realizing they were all wiped out saddened Josh, but at the same time he respected the Combine for being able to take over Earth in Seven Hours and crush any resistance. After being found by the Combine, he was sent to City 45.

Upon arrival to this new environment, Josh was lost and didn't know what to do with himself. He was used to being surrounded by friends and family, but those days were over. He asked around the city for more information about things. After being informed of where he was, what happened, and who the Combine were, he began to think of how he could restart his life here. The CCA intrigued him immediately. He saw their discipline, the way they presented themselves, and their desire for order, and the prestige their officers held, called to Josh. While he realized they were the ones who separated him from his family, took him from his home, and destroyed his beloved country, he saw another chance to become a part of what he always desired. He showed no anger towards the Combine Civil Authority, but only respect.

After learning of the Loyalist point system and how it could be his ticket to join what he what respected so much and desired to be a part of, he got his hands on a request device from the local store ran by the CWU. With this device, Josh called in contraband here and there, suspicious people, and the occasional anti-citizen. He felt it was his duty to keep society safe and do his best with what he had to make sure people upheld the laws. One day he overheard two men talking about a shotgun stashed in a room in the UCH. Knowing owning weapons was a high level offence, and that only bloodshed could come of such a weapon, he reported it in. The CCA raided the UCH room Josh reported and were very surprised to find the shotgun hidden in the bathroom. Josh was awarded the last few points he needed to gain Loyalist status and was given his Loyalist armband which he wore with the utmost pride and dignity. He was overjoyed at gaining Loyalist status, knowing this was the first big step towards obtaining his goal of becoming a CCA officer.

2) Please detail your characters traits. (Eg, Pure, Lawful, Trustworthy)
Proud, Honest, Hardworking, Loyal, Trustworthy

3) Please provide 2 paragraphs about what you are expecting the Combine Civil Authority to be like for you and your character.
I am expecting the Combine Civil Authority to be a new type of challenge for my character. My character has learned the in's and out's of civilian life wants a greater challenge. My character doesn't expect the CCA to be easy for him, but that's what he likes about it. He wants to use the CCA to expand his horizons and improve him as a person, and he wants the CCA to use him as an instrument of order.

I'm personally expecting the CCA to be a fun challenge. Not an easy challenge, but a fun one to experience. As a person, I like to be pushed and challenged to achieve things I desire. I'm drawn to organizations that are hard to get into and I strive to become a part of it if it interests me. The CCA and what they stand for interests me greatly and I'm hoping to having the opportunity to join and experience new things. I'm expecting the CCA to be a sort of brotherhood in terms of the relationships between the members and I want to be a part of that. I'm also expecting the CCA to give me a new RP experience, and improve my RP skills further by presenting me with a new way of role-playing.

4) Please provide a detailed back-story from an out-of-character perspective on your applying character. This section must be detailed and consist of a minimum of 300 words.
Born in November of 1992, Josh Arnold lived with his mother, Melanie, and his father, Roger, until the age of five. At the age of two, his father, a Vietnam War veteran, died of heart complications at the age of 44. His mother got into drugs and alcohol and his aunt had to take custody of him at the age of five. Josh grew up not knowing his father, but hearing of how he was, he strived to be like him; simple, hard working, and honest. Josh also grew a desire for a life of discipline and wanted to be respected and looked up to. He spent four years in N.J.R.O.T.C. in his high school and loved that lifestyle. He planned to join the military when he graduated and make a career out of it as a pilot. At the age of eighteen, Josh contacted a recruiter for the Army National Guard, a military branch in the United States. After being checked out for medical problems, he was turned down and unable to join any branch because of his motion sickness.

Josh went on with his life, working petty jobs and just getting by in society, when one day chaos erupted. The Combine invaded Earth and took it over in seven hours. During the confusion, Josh was found alone wondering the streets of his hometown looking for people and answers. The Combine officers who found him sent him to a place with other survivors where they were each divided up and sent to different cities. Josh was sent to City 45, which he realized was far from his home in the U.S. He saw that City 45 was a diverse place, full of people from all over the world, of all kinds of cultures. After spending a few months in the city, he learned his way around and how things worked. He also learned about the CCA, who's discipline and order caught Josh's attention. He learned of how he could apply to join if he obtained Loyalist status. He set out to achieve that goal, and wanted to become a part of the CCA strongly as it was his new opportunity to live a life of order, discipline, and respect that he wanted when he first tried to join the Army National Guard before the Seven Hour War.

5) Have you ever had a CCA character here at Catalyst Gaming?  If so, explain why it was removed.

7. Whats your most memorable quality RP experience?
I was playing with an anti-citizen character with a group of others and we took in a new member who pretended to be in our group but later told the CCA about us and where our base was. The CCA raided the base and I managed to hide until just before they left, after detaining two others, when they noticed me behind a couch. I was also detained and we were all later questioned and killed. I tried to give the CCA officers interrogating me false information to keep them from catching our other two members that weren't there when we got raided. The whole process of everything was a really fun, in depth RP experience, from being detained to being questioned and even amputated.

8. Do you consider yourself a good listener?
Yes, I pay a lot of attention to detail.

Ok, so I got on after the server was reset and working again and Titan reset my points after Veran verified my problem. I manually D/C'd a few mins after he gave me the points to see if I could reconnect and have it my stuff still. It had wiped my points and wiped my physical description and gave me another new CID again. It seems I can't even manually disconnect without this happening. Titan told me he would tell some more high up guys who could better deal with the problem about it. I told him about this post here so he could read about the issue.

If you have any way to help me please let me know. I assure you, I'm not making this up to get points.

The server actually just crashed after getting about 50 people on it. The same thing happened last night. Is the server even capable of having 50 people on it? This means my info is gone yet again, and I'll have to have an admin reset it, yet again..

I think I might be getting disconnected more frequently when there are over 40 people or so on the server. I've gotten disconnected over and over again yesterday when the server nearly full, and every time I did, it reset my information and an admin had to give my points back and I'd have to redo my physical description. The same thing started happening again tonight after the server got to around 45+ members on. I don't even want to ask the admin to reset my stuff anymore because I'm afraid their gonna stop believing me.

There was also an update yesterday, and I'm wondering if the problem could be due to that some how? I seem to be the only one having this issue and I don't know if its due to something on my end, like my internet connection, or its something to do with the new update. If anyone else is having this problem, let me know. It kind of makes it impossible for me to really play when the server has over 40 members on it which is an inconvenience but I guess I'll have to deal with it.

If anyone knows has a solution to this problem, it would be greatly appreciated if you would let me know.

I'm planning to apply for CCA on the HL2RP server when my 2 week waiting period is up. I'm worried though, because I'll have only been registered on the forums for about 2 weeks when I actually apply, which makes it look like I've only been RPing for 2 weeks. Which is true when it comes to this server, but not RPing in general and on other servers.

I don't want to be denied because I'll have only been registered here for 2 weeks, or because it seems like I've had 2 weeks or so of RP experience on this server, when I've actually got years of RPing experience in general, and months of experience with HL2RP on other servers.

I'm asking about this because I was wondering how much the amount of time you've spent on this server RPing and how much time you've been registered here on the forums comes into consideration when being chosen for CCA. My information here as of now isn't impressive because as I said, I've only been registered a week, and I've only got about a week or so of playtime on this particular HL2 server.

I'm an Administrator on another forum and have been for well over a year and I'm pretty experienced in RPing in general. I think I'm capable of handling a CCA character with exceptional RP. I'd hate for my app to just be thrown out just because of my stats here with this particular server and forum. So if someone who actually knows about what I'm asking could respond to this post and tell me how much these things are taken into consideration, it would be greatly appreciated. I feel like these things are taken highly into consideration, so please inform me if I'm right or wrong on that. Thanks.

Well I don't want to get points, get Loyalist status (which I had) then lose them over an RSO, then have to re earn them because admins don't believe me because I have to frequently ask for my points to be given back, only to lose them all again on the next RSO, whenever that may be. I also get tired of having to retype my physical description.

I noticed the servers went down for an hour though. Is the update being tweaked or something? Is there any way my problem could be linked to my character?

Everything seems to be fine now after what ever happened last night on the server. To my surprise, my information was saved so I guess everything is good.

240
Things seemed to be fine before the new update was put in place and I hardly ever got Reliable Snapshot Overflow errors (RSO). Now, after the update, I seem to get them more frequently and if it disconnects me, it resets all my information including my characters physical description, their CID, and their points. Not only that, but I've even had it happen after I just disconnected regularly and tried to reconnect. I've had to have my points re added about 4 times now.

I don't want to get banned for admins not believing me and thinking I'm just trying to find a way to get points, because I'm not. I don't know if this is happening to anyone else, but its happening to me. My in game characters name is Josh Arnold. I know VOID 152 has helped me with it once before, and so did UU.C45.SeC.58466 on about 3 occasions.

It seems to be more laggy and I get connection issues far more often sometimes and I just can't play on this server if my info and points are going to be reset every time I log out or get RSO'd or D/C'd in any way.
